Alternator mounting picture....

I was wondering if someone could post a picture of a 12V alternator installed on an 8N with front mount distributor....I have that setup but the brackets and all are homemade by the previous owner. The belt has been running on the distributor and has actually worn a groove/hole in the distributor housing. I would like to make some new brackets but I need to see a picture of how it is all mounted and how it "should" look. Thanks in advance. I believe my distributor is okay, I just need to patch up the hole with some JB Weld or something.

John (TR), thanks for the excellent pics...that will help me a lot. Looking at those pics, my brackets will problaby work. Duey, if I get a longer belt, the brackets I have will be fine...I just didn't think of that for some reason. Simple solution but it just never crossed my mind...Like I said before, I'm new to this. Thanks for all the help!

I"d like to give the people who designed and sell those brackets for Delcos to go on N Fords a word or two! That L-shaped bracket they tell us to stick on top of the head, using two of the head-bolts/studs.... ain"t gonna work! Been there! Done that! The second hole in that bracket will interfere with the throttle pedestal! The torque-rod that operates the throttle sits on top of a pedestal that bolts to the head, and that L-shaped bracket adds too much thickness for the bolt/stud, and even if that weren"t the case, the throttle would be misaligned due to the thickness of that L-bracket! I had to cut that bracket between the two mounting holes and mount it using only one head-bolt/stud. Then..to keep the bracket from rotating about the bolt/stud...I had to weld another brace onto it which runs across infront of the block, and across/above the water pump. I can"t believe they sell so many of these and yet I"m the only one to complain about this.

Gahor
Mine did not fit right either, hence the modifications. I did not like the idea of bolting it the head bolts (Not sure why) so I modified mine to catch the top of the water pump. Also had to do some work to the the atl lines up with the water pump and crank pulleys.

I have longer studs on the throttle linkage bracket the way it is. I suppose if I added a bracket to that stud I would have to go to an even longer stud. CNH has standard length 7/16" studs and bolts cheap like 75-cents instead of $7.50 for the part number stud cut to length out to two decimal places.
I buy the standard size and then cut to length or maybe just put an extra washer under the head. Whatever; depending on the application and my mood at the time.

Alvin, don't you think that running a belt that is just a little longer will move the alternator OUT just a bit a therefore move the belt off the distributor?? Keeping the belt properly tensioned keeps it from 'flopping' and wearing on the distributor.

One of the clever fellas on this board also mounted an idler pulley nearby, even posted a picture of it. Neat idea!!

Perhaps he'll chime in and post the picture again. duey

John,

Wow! Those are really nice pictures. It looks like you have done an excellent job on the tractor. I'd be proud if mine looked that nice!

I'll try to get a photo posted later but I think the brackets are readily avilable. I have a GM alternator and I see the same brackets on ebay and other places as well. I bought a conversion kit but ended up modifying the top bracket to bolt to the back of the water pump instead of the top of the engine head.
