Digging Trenches with 8N????

I have a project from the misses - to dig a trench and lay down PVC conduit and wire for a garden pond in the middle of my front lawn. Pond is in place and just need to get some more large rocks. (not from around LA of course - imported only!) The trench just needs to be able to be deep enough to lay conduit etc. thinking about shovel depth according to local electricians. distance is approximately 150 feet at min.

I would like to know this since I want to dig trenchs for PVC water providers to my paddocks for my horses. Is this practical/possible with an 8N? Or should I just get a small ditchwitch or dig it out by hand. Just like using the 8n when I can!

Thx
Andy

The req'd minimum burial depth per NEC is: dirrect buried cable----24" rigid metal conduit----- 6" rigid nonmetallic conduit(pvc)-----18"

I dont see a problem plowing out a 6" furrow. I'd
think an 18" is pushing it. Have you ever considered building a mini tile plow? These look like a vibratory plow or a huge ripper. Farmes use them to lay drain tile around
their fields.

I have a similar project. I need to put a wire out to the new pole shed (for the 2N). I plan on hooking up the 1 bottom plow and rolling over the sod, laying the wire and then flipping the sod back over.

I tried it is my sister's pasture and it worked fine.

Andy,
I have trenched using my 8N with a potato plow. This works ok for shallow trenches. I rather like the idea in the article "Trenching with a plow" that is in the archives.

I just put one ripper tooth on my box blade, made several passes over the future ditch and then cleaned the ditch out with a shovel. The dirt which did contain rocks (northern Arkansas) was easy to shovel. The ditch was for a pvc sprinkler system. Just do it before it gets hot.

Andy-

If you had checked the article archives like a good boy (Just Kidding (JK)-darn repeat questions!). .there is a article from a couple months ago about how do that with your exact tractor. ..

Titled "Trenching with a plow". . here is the link. .it should work for your cause, and assist in justifying the purchase of your tractor even further to the Mrs.

Careful you don't grab any roots or rocks and flip over, or break the plow.

I have heard several people talk of using a slightly modified soil conditioner to do it all in one pass, then you have to go back and cover trench. I have a similiar project on the back burner but hopefully won't have to do for a year or so. If you decide to try it, please post a description of your results. Good Luck.

Bob

Just butting-in here Andy. On top of Wimberly having lots of rocks, it's one of the nicest places I've been around. Lived in Austin in the '80s and always loved visiting Wimberly. Is the Salt Lick still there, Ray? Darn good BBQ!

Todd in LA(where the mexican food and BBQ is lame)

Hi Andy, Quite a few post's in the archives about it. Looks like there has been a lot of success with a plow set kinda nose down.

Get you a small middle-buster and have at it. Or a chisel plow with one ripper. I'd actually opt for a rental ditch-witch. QUicker and easier.
