I have painted three engines - all with enamel and two with a brush. This one was done on the stand, and I put a second coat on after several hours when the paint was still tacky. This kept the second coat from running but still bonded well with the first coat and smoothed out real well. I prefer to paint on a working engine though. I still put two coats on in the same manner as above, but after letting the second coat sit overnight (still wet paint), I start the tractor up and run it for quite some time. The heat will actually smooth the paint to almost glass, and gives it a hard shell (baked enamel). It works great.

BTW - I brush all my cast iron unless I just happen to have it sitting out by a sprayer. I have done tractors both ways, and like the thickness you can get by brushing - and the rough cast iron hides the brush strokes very well.

Good luck,
Dan

I'm getting ready to paint my engine as well. I've got her cleaned up pretty good. I just need to degrease everything real well and I'll be spraying on a coat of primer and then brushing on the rest.

Jim..... ....I like to suggest brush painting castiron 'cuz it don't show and you gittta HEAVY coat of paint that doesn't run like spraypaint does. Remember, you haffta thin yer paint to spray it, and you waste about 1/2 the paint in misty spray and not hitting the target. All other painting caveats apply..... ....Dell, the 20/20 painter (looks good at 20ft or 20mph)

I think it's easier to spray the engine.. but I'll bet some prefer brushing.

Just get the loos paint and rust off with a wire brush, and degrease before painting.

Before you start painting, I'd suggest running it and look for any oil leaks. Sometimes the valve covers can take lots of gasket sealer to keep from leaking. Once you know everything is good, then primer and paint. JMO

That must be my problem.... in reply to Matt (MN), 12-23-2005 21:09:02
My 8n doesn't have a valve cover. Where can I find this thing of which you speak?

I see, we have an issue with my description. I have always known those as side covers. My first reply was an early morning attempt at humor, as obviously, these flatheads don't have a "normal" valve cover like overhead valve engines do.

It's early, I'm still sleepy, you can all resume your normal viewing pleasure. The show is over, nothing here to see.
