Please I'm pulling my hair out! I put a 8 volt battery in tractor for easier starting! Tractor ran good for about 2 days. Then it spit and sputtered and died! The coil melted! I put a new coil on and added a second resitor in line to coil, so as not to melt coil! Thank You's for your help! ps. I need tractor to plow snow! tractor and car now stuck in driveway!

Check and clean your points, when the coil melted it also probably burned the points. Your problem is just one more reason not to use an 8 volt battery. These old N will start in any weather if they are in good shape with 6 volt batterys.
