Sorry about E-mail address mistake! 1941 9N ran find for 2 days after putting a 8 volt battery in for easy starting. It spitted and sputtered then died! Coil was melted! I put a new coil in, and added a second inline ressitor to coil! Now it won't start. Thank you for your help! PS I need tractor to plow snow! Tractor and car now stuck in driveway!

If easier starting was your goal, I think I'd be going back to a six volt battery and taking that 2nd resistor out, since it won't start at all now after what you did to it!

That eight volt battery idea is just a bandaid approach to overcome other underlying problems.

Eight volts was too much for your coil, that second resistor is too much too and now you arent getting any (or enough) juice to your coil and points so you have no spark.

Six volts will start your tractor just fine assuming its properly tuned, good clean tight electrical connections, proper winter weight oil, and no low compression issues.

Your six volt generator will not be able to charge that eight volt battery.

I'm sure some of the others here will have additional advice too.
