For what it's worth. My brother has an 8n with side mount dist. that he has owned for 30 yrs. When the generator quit charging, he just disconnected it and "temporarily" put his 12v truck battery in to finish a hogging job. That was several months ago and now, he just puts it on a charger at night and works it all day. Sez that he has had no problems starting and keeping it running. JMHO..Ron

I've been doing it that way with my J.D.420 for 30 years.I try to leave it on a downhill for starting while using to make the battery last longer, for a few days.

When I bought my 2N it had no generator. The previous owner just made sure he had a good hot battery and he could bushhog all day with no problem...It still had the 6V coil so he had the 12 to 6V dropping resistor in the line going to the coil. I changed it all the way to a 12V system, including the 12V square coil.

If you stop filing an IRS form each year you will get away with it for awhile.

Most of us have improvised in certain situations but your brother's solution will cause problems eventually.

I'm thinking that the only part that might be in jeopardy is the coil ($14). I only mentioned it cause so many are having generator/alternator/starting problems. This was how he managed his and it works for him. Ron

That can't be good for the coil unless he changed that to.

I would have thought so also, but he had spoke to an Electric Garage" and they told him that his round can coil (unlike the square can type) does not really care whether 6v or 12v is applied. He was using an 8v battery for a long while and just got tired of replacing them. and like I say, this is a working tractor and he only cares that it runs during the day when he needs it. JMHO....Ron
