If something I said caused offense it certainly wasn't intended that way. Until I can figure out how to get a spell checker here I don't want English teachers grading my work either.

My point was---and still is--that it is almost always cheaper in the long run to do it right the first time. A lot of my time is spent redoing things where people thought they were saving either time or money by not doing right in the first place.

I agree do it right the first time. Do a job you can be proud of and not want to hide so no one sees you goofed. Dog dirt does happen and some times it can be painfull both physically and on the wallet.

A perfect example of "cheaper to do it right the first time" happened to me on Monday.

I happen to be in Miami, FL at the moment on other business. One of the things I learned how to do over the years is motorized window treatments. Went to a 30th floor condo on the beach where there were two floor to celling windows in the master bedroom that met at about a fifteen degree angle.

This had to be a high five figure decorating job and maybe low six. In the two windows they had put two Hunter Douglas pleated motorized shades and tried to drive them off one motor with a solid connection between the drive shafts. Probably worked for ten or twenty cycles before it went bad.

As soon as UPS gets here with the parts they can now pay for my time to take it down; put two new motors in--yes the first motor now also fails the sniff test probably from being overloaded; pay me put it all back together and then reset the limit switches.

Would have cost about a hundred more to do it right in the first place which in the context of the job wouldn't even pay the sales tax. I will have over three hundred worth of parts in the job and I am not shy about billing for my time or my helpers.

Your mileage may vary

Smokie, I don't if you're planning on a "short block" or "long block" version remanufactured engine but, having dealt in this area when I worked at a car dealership years back we found it was best to go with the "long block" version. The long blocks that were supplied to us were referred to as sealed units, complete from the oil pan to the valve cover, they even had the oil filter installed. The only thing that had to be added was the new water pump, the flywheel/clutch set up, bolt up the intake, exhaust, starter, wire it up, add fluids and it was ready to go. The short block versions were usually a problem because of the cylinder head. Is it cracked? Are the valves and seats any good? etc, etc. Then there's the aggravation of changing over the head and the related items. Another "plus" was that the long blocks came with a one year warranty on the complete motor as the short blocks did not. Whichever path you choose, I hope all goes well with your rebuild. Jeff,.. my $.02 worth.

Dell gave you good advice in both of his posts. You already have the engine apart and you have determined what it needs. You have the ability to rebuild the engine yourself for less than the cost of the remanufactured unit. I would not put too much emphasis on the side distributor. My 8N has a front mount which is not hard to take off and it's better to work on it at the work bench intstead of out in the rain/snow/etc.
