For those of you that have installed a Sherman high/low transmission: Should I drill a 1 inch hole and then plan on hogging it out with a die grinder? or are the templates and the spec's from the Smith website good enough for me to just drill a 1 1/4 inch hole and have it align perfectly with the shifter?

Thanks

Randy

John Smith's template will get you plenty close enough. Holesaw a one inch hole first and check for center. Then you'll know which direction to hog (if any). The grommet seems to be a relatively new item added to the installation as MOST(not all) of the tractors I've bought with Shermans only had a 1 inch hole and the dealers were good at locating center the first time. I used it once . I'm not sure if it was me or what ; but I ended up die grinding it a little more forward so my shaft was center of the hole because the shift handle wouldn't go on the shaft . It came out fine other than that .Be sure to use a grommet after you're done drilling . It makes the job more complete . Good luck . Ken

Randy if you are not in a big hurry; in a week or two I am pulling a two speed, I always make a fiberglass outer pattern using the flange holes for reference, when I ship a Sherman out, People all say they fir up good, I also use an inch and a quarter hole say, rather than a bit, as the casting is soft, I will be glad to send you a pattern, but any thing you get from Smith is top quality,

Hobo, I wash the side of casting with thinner, mis some reisen and hardner, cut a couple pieces of fiber glass mat about 10 by 10 spray the casting with pam if you don't have any releasing agent, just a light coat over the area you are going to use for a pattern, brush on a coat of reisen lay out the cloth, brush it down good, I lay the matup on the front edge of the casting and back over the hole needed for the Sherman, make sure you have it wet enough to fit up good to every indentation, when dry mark the hole for the shift arm, as well as a hole or two on the front lip of the casting, for reference, pop it off, I always trim the edges, befor I send them to any body, they lay out super good on the casting, so far no one has ask me for casting, but after all I am the guy who made two mistakes this year, Awesome Henry
