I pulled the head studs out of my engine block as they looked worse for the wear. Threads were rough and rust on the middle part. Is it OK to use regular grade 5 or grade 8 bolts or is there something special about the specific head bolt kits I see advertised? Also, I read on this site somewhere that a thread sealant shoud be used on the threads of the studs that go into the block. Would the same hold true with the head bolts? I don"t see how any coolant would leak past, but maybe I"m missing something? Thanks, Rick.

Rick..... ....my N-Ford Master Parts Catalog (MPC) ONLY lists p/n: 8N-6065-A; bolt, cylinder head, 7/16-14x2-3/8", grade 8, 1939-1952. (fittz-awl) This is a factory approved field "up-grade". It does NOT LIST head studs enny more; even though your 9N had them and their frontmount engine displays head studnuts.

Make certain yer engine corner boltholes are DRY (use Q-tips) There have been "unfortunate" shadetree mechanics that didn't check and the left-over water dribbles from removing the cylinderhead for gasket replacement have "HYDRAULIC-PRESSURED" and cracked the corner of the block-off when they bolted up the cylinderhead. NASTY.

DO NOT "puckey" yer headgasket.

Yes, use some-sort of thread-sealant 'cuz most of yer threaded block-holes are WET to the engine coolant. But the cylinderhead thru-holes are dry. NO WASHERS.

Remember to re-torque yer cylinder bolts/studnuts to specified torque after about 1/2hr of runnin' time, engine warm..... ....Dell

Rick, for sure use a thread sealer, as some of these studs screw directly into the water jacket. I think I've been using liquid teflon for hyd hose sealing. I would use any good brand of stud that is the correct length, also the tall nuts....Kelly.

Thanks all. I shouldn"t have a problem with liquid in the holes as this will be a fresh rebuild right from the machine shop. I have some really good Chesterton teflon gold end thread sealant that supposedly never hardens so it should be perfect for this application. I"ll look at the store for some grade 8 bolts. Seems a waste to buy bolts at the New Holland dealer if I can get them from Fastenal or Atlantic Fastener for 1/4 of the price. Thanks again.
