How would YOU steal a tractor?

Ok.. Everyone put on their "evil" thinking caps..

A month or two ago there was a discussion on preventing tractor theft. Most of it centered on adding a unique indentifier to their tractor, ie a hidden name etc. Although there were some great ideas, none of these would PREVENT tractor theft

Realistically, if someone steals your tractor, the chances of you ever seeing it again are pretty nil! The idea is to prevent it from being stolen in the first place. There was a guy down the road from me with an 800 with a bush hog for sale. Someone, in the dead of night unhooked the bush hog and drove the tractor away!

So... How would you steal a tractor? I would like to know so that I can use the info to prevent my tractor from disappearing!

For starters, I was thinking of putting a toggle switch near the coil, somewhere where its easy to access but hard for someone unfamiliar with it to know it needs to be "on" to start the tractor.

Tractor theft in my area is not a big problem but it only takes one shmuck to ruin your day?

Any ideas???

I had a friend who had a friend who would steal hiway equipment. Really nothing to it. back up with a flatbed and load it. All it really takes is a brass set of ?alls. If they want it bad enough they'll take it! it really is that simple. I don't care what you do to prevent it.

When I picked up my 9N, it had 4 flat tires and the transmission was locked in gear. I used my neighbor"s $19 cable come-a-long and towed it up onto his flatbed trailer(see it in 9N pictures) in about 15 minutes by myself. I like Dan"s Lo-Jack idea the best. If a theif really wants it, he"s going to get it no matter what the security is. The only bonus is most theives are lazy(otherwise they"d have a job and wouldn"t have to steal your stuff) so if it is difficult to steal, they may go somewhere else to steal...

The theives who stole my restored 8N, new finish mower, and new Honda 4x4 simply cut the chain on my gate, cut the lock on the barn, backed up their trailer to the front of the barn and winched everything onto the trailer. I know that for a fact, because one of my neighbors watched them do it. They also drove off with my 640, but it ran out of gas down the gravel road that runs next to my place. I got it back. Anyone now interested in stealing my tractors will have to work a little harder. All five of them are cabled (1 1/2 inch with metal flex conduit cover) to an hardened eye-bolt sunk into a 30 gallon drum filled with concrete and buried in the ground. Distributor rotors are all removed and dummy coil wire installed. Locks are surrounded by pipe so it is impossible to get a bolt cutter on them. I now leave my gate open; if its closed, I'm obviously not home. The barn door is fixed so that they would have to pull it off the barn to get it opened and once inside, the passage to the tractor area is blocked with an I-beam. They are going to have to really want my tractors to steal them now. They are going to have to spend the better part of a day or night to get them out of the barn and they will be doing it with the sound of a firehouse bell blaring from the hayloft (the wire comes directly off the pole, is buried the entire way to the barn, and once inside is encased in thin-wall conduit and covered with a slotted 2x6). You can hear the bell for miles. Lots of luck!

Leave an impliment on three point. makes it a little harder to move.Pins in a bind are hard to get out, plow or blade in the dirt make it take a little longer to load. Security lights also help. Best is the afore mentioned BIG DOG ( get little dog to wake up the big dog).

ok guys, here's mine, since any disabling of the electrical system wont prevent the tractor being moved by someone with a handy tow truck or rollback, that only partialy works, go buy a 10 foot section of 4" drill pipe, sink it 4 feet in the ground, in cement. fill pipe with cement, this is your "post" get 10 feet of 3/8 chain, then get 25 feet of heavy transport chain,[ this is used in the trucking industry to haul heavy equipment, this is not the cheap stuff] and 3of the biggest locks that will fit thru the chain. now to secure your tractor, trun the steering wheel all the way either direction, and wrap a piece of 3/8 chain around the tractor's tranny housing and up thru the steering wheel, now get your heavy chain and figure 8 it around both axle trumpets and around your post, lock it with the other 2 locks, now lest see, a hacksaw or bolt cutters wont cut that chain, no jack will lift the tractor 6 feet in the air, and they cant cut the pipe because the cement inside will destroy any hacksaw blade, even if they do get it cut loose they still have to do it all over again to get the tractor to roll up on a truck or trailer, nobody's going to go thru all that for a N tractor,

plain and simple I would use a rollback, or a trailer with a winch, if that tractor is parked on a downhill slope I am just putting it in neutral and its gone if it needs winching I would back right up to it and my cable would be all ready for a quick hook, give me 4 minutes and that thing is gone, I dont have to chain her down untill I get a safe distance from you. That being said I see that the only way a tractor is getting stollen, I dont see anyone driving it down the road, no lights too slow too much attention, these tractors of ours all have little tricks to start them anyhow, choke in ,only for a second tho, half throttle no more, you know what I mean, it is getting towed out of there, no doubt, I feel the only deterent or a way to slow it down is maybe park it between something, park it sideways behind a tree , make it not so simple but if "I" want it "I "am going to get it no chain is gonna stop me, no "electric problem" is gonna stop me, I dont thik that tractor stealing is t hat common, or at least I hope not, at least it aint around here, I have left my tractors (my 2 yr old new holland tn55) on jobsites with my bushhog hooked , left it on loggong jobs, left the backhoe on jobs many times, never had any of them touched,,maybe I am lucky, I do take the keys out not that it woould make much difference, I leave mytractors around here all the keys are in them I would never find the right key anyway, I have around 18 tractors that run right now, another "few" that are parts or in the ready to run stages, if someone wants my tractors they are going to get them no matter how hard I try not to let them have them, sorry for the long post gotta go,pat

Just pull the roter off the distributor...a friend does this for his farmall he keeps up on his wood lot back in the mountians....easy to take off and easy to put on....will prevent the engine from starting and is harder to jury rig should someone discover the reason the engine won't start. You can jump the coil but won't run without a roter. If someone wants it bad enough they could always come back with the right roter. Besides if they want bad enough they will get it...I'd be more worried about people stealing parts from it (carb, gen, ect).

Darn - I see the LoJack has been mentioned. LoJack now carries a service that constantly monitors and tracks your device(s) via GPS. You have one transmitter that you mount/hide somewhere on the vehicle you are protecting, then you have another on a keychain (hidden somewhere close by the tractor). Whenever these two transmitters get more than a few miles away from each other, LoJack automatically calls you, stepping through multiple contact numbers (cell, home, work, wifes cell, etc.) and will also email you to multiple email addresses notifying you the vehicle has traveled away from the keychain.

This way - the theft is identified quickly, and they know EXACTLY where the tractor is at all times until the crooks find/destroy the transmitter (unlikely that they will be looking for one on a tractor).

If you are really concerned about theft, this is the way to go IMO. This is what I have on my 2003 Ford Mustang Cobra.

OH!!! (smacking self in forehead) If I'd only thought -- I could've towed the whole mess to, um, Denver! Yeah, Denver! And just parked it somewhere and . . . wait a minute. Then I would've lost Arthur, too. Hmmm. I guess the crooks wouldn't want to steal the loader and leave my tractor, huh? LOL Too bad! Though now that it's loose, maybe I can drape it suggestively across the side of the dirt road or something, see if maybe some cowboys will drag it off the next time they drive their herds up to the top of the canyon this coming spring. :-)

The toggle switch is a laughable idea... I can take a single wire with a set of gator clips on it and wire from battery to coil primary... doesn't mater if you have 50 cutout switches on it...

Seems like a simple way to steal one is the same way we go pick up broken down models... your truck, trailer, and a winch. I helped a fellow move his 9n recently using a harbor freight 49$ winch.. had it off the ground and on the trailer in under 5 minutes.

Back when i was working on my JB-B, while I had it partially disassembled, i needed to roll it out of the barn.. just put it in gear, and stepped ont he electric start button, and then pushed the hand clutch in a bit.. tractor moved easilly under 'starter' power.

If the area is remote, you could pose as the owner, and call a flatbed tow truck to come get it as a 'broke' down unit.. etc.

Any kind of fastener device.. like a chain, steel caple, etc can be cut with a shear. hacksaw, sawzall or abrasive disc.. quick... Alternately, I've not seen many things that a smoke wrench won't remove either.

Removing a wheel will add inconvienience.. but if I wanted the tractor and it was unguarded.. I think I could find a wheel to bolt up with 2 lugnuts each side just to get it down the road / up on a trailer...

In the end.. short of an armed 24 hr guard.. or an impenetrable concrete 'bunker'... if someone wants your stuff bad enough.. they will get it.

On another board, a fellow had a roll off storage container dropped out inthe woods on his vacant 'weekend' property.. had a security cam too... crooks used a torch and cut the slid lock right out of the door.. and took vcr when they left...

The easiest way would be to back up to it with a flatbed trailer and winch it on, no way to stop it, locks, cables, and chains can easily be cut.
Best off out of sight.

Don"t forget the fuel shut off. If you make a habit of turning off the fuel, then even if someone starts it up, it won"t go far. Most people wouldn"t know how to turn it back on., Other than that, someone can always tow a tractor or put it on a trailer, which makes almost no sound at all. And doesn"t require starting it. And theres really no stoping that.

Thats the one problem with tractors they are easy to steal. Shoot I can go up to a tractor that runs and have it gone in 5 minutes or less. If some one wants it then it will be gone other then maybe parking it in a building that is locked and even then its still not that hard to steal.

I keep mine in the garage. (wife loves this). You could also put something like a lojack on it to track it if its stolen. I don't think they're real expensive - I know a guy who put one on his mobil air compressor he uses for his work because it keeps getting stolen. Gets it back every time now.

Dawn - Lojack is an electronic tracking device. It is hidden on the vehicle. If the vehicle is stolen you call the company and they will track your vehicle and transmit location to police. Look at www.lojack.com for complete info.

reverse the coil wire with a plug wire, just look'in at the cap most will never see the switch out. I had a 69 Harley that I welded on the plate under the transmission to contact me iffin you were in prossesion of it. That’s been 32 years and no one has contacted me yet so ingrave'in parts izz a waste of time, I also clearly marked my name and # on other internal parts. I have also brought motorcycles that I found out later to be HOT, I even took a guy to court over this and they just slapped'em on the hand. I had to settle with the insurance co over ownership and this fool tried to buy it back from under me from the insurance co. He stole it and they tried to seal it again from me. He izz no longer with us as hiz way of life caught up with’em. I also found I had a 1974 Harley that wuz hot and tried to git it straiten out, the bike wuz bought at a police auction they did not check it out all they wanted wuz the money. Because this ended up in such a mess, everyone involved munked up the DMV issued me a custom built serial # to shut me up. Iffin not for the local DMV inspector I would have lost the bike and all I wanted wuz to git it straight for the next fellow. After this I should have let it be like the 2 otter owners who had the bike before me. If your tractor izz stold you will be the one that hasta prove its yours if you are lucky enoufh to prove it.

Take the rotor out of the distributor. You can always use a plug wire for the coil in a pinch & move it with 3 cylinders firing. Also not as obvious that engine is disabled.

On one rear wheel take off the
lug nuts.

Just remember when YOU go to drive it
to replace them. Otherwise like the
thief you will be spending hours putting
the wheel back on and jacking up the now
tilted tractor.
