Yeah, searched most of the archives! (hahaha)

I am in the middle of my hydaulic fluid/tranny fluid change. I pulled the first pipe plug (differential) and then BOOM - nothing. It had so much crud it didn't even move. I had to sift through it with a screwdriver. Ok now it was flowing. Then went up to the hydraulic plug - similar problem with sludge. I stuck my driver and my fingers up to dislodge the crud. (Thinking all of the while...Now I know what a proctologist must feel like!!!!! !!! Wow - very strange and dirty job.) Moved up the tranny drain and it drain fine and was relatively sludge free.

Now the questions:
I am in no direct hurry to get it back together right this minute. So what is the "BEST JOB THE FIRST TIME THAT I DO AT THIS POINT"? Do I perform a flush with kerosene or diesel fluid? Should I pop open any other plates on the tractor for cleaning? What about the gaskets on the plugs? What size/type and where do I get them? Should I fluid an entire 5 gallons of new gear oil through the hydaulic system? I don't want to break the tractor in half or anything! (gulp!)

Anything else I should do while I have the fluid out?

Thanks so much!
Andy

I've been wondering about changing the fluids on my new-to-me '48 8N simply because I have no idea how it was treated in the past. But on the other hand if things seems to be working fine (and they do), maybe I'd be better off just to leave things alone. What do you wise guys have to say?

Check your fluid level and color in the tranny/hydraulic system. It shouldn't be milky tan or frothy white or anything - check it with the lift arms extended. I say that you do it. If you do, I recommend taking time to bushhog and run the unit till hot and tired then change the fluids to make sure that you get as much gunk out as possible.

According to manual it should be flushed every year or 600 hours or something. (think the previous owner left the original from the factory gear oil) - I like to experiment and fix my 8N but that is just me.

Like Claus said before - I cannot see someone just checking their compression for the heck of it - if it ain't broke.....(grin)

Well, I did check my compression too! 115 across so go figure - I just look for trouble!!!!! !!
But to me all of this work - is just plain fun!

Andy, not is the time of flush it out.
Kero or diesel will work. put in 4-5 gal, run it for 4-5 min working the hydrolics and then drain.
If it is still dirty, wait 30 min to let the gunk settle in the flush and then put the "cleaner" stuff back in( don't use the bottom part of the
dirty sludge that is in the drain pan). run it again and then drain good.
replace hyd oil.

If you want to feel even more like a proctologist pull the PTO drive shaft--four cap screws no big deal--and dive in and muck it out by hand. There are casting ridges that seperate the rear end from the trans but you can get your arm in there unless there is a gorilla somewhere in your genology.

Your mileage may vary

Ok, finished! I pulled the hydraulic pump assembly & PTO shaft & cleaned everything I could. Talk about inches and inches of deep sludge!!! I used Diesel fuel to flush out the cavity and the hydraulic mechanisms - I then replaced everything and filled it with 5 gallons (less 1 quart) of 80W90SAE Gear Oil. (due to age of wear on hydraulics etc) --- boy does it like it better now!

The lift that hardly held up anything for more a couple of mins (most times much less) - holds steady for a VERY LONG TIME now. Fluid make that much difference? It was very black and very thin.
Hopefully this will help everything!

thanks for all of the comments and suggestions!

And when you are finished with the PTO, drop the pump and clean the sludge out of it.. A solvent will do good only if you can also brush the innards. It is up to you how involved you want to get.. The crap has been accumulating for 50 years and another few aint gonna hurt.. If you drop the pump you have to ensure that the control arm (techinical term for this is "Long skinny thing haging down from above") is seated in the cup of the rocker intake/exhaust valve when reassembling.

ANDY

I had a similar experience last winter with my 8N.

I ended up draining all fluids (you have done this).
Removing the PTO, Removing the Lift Cover, Removing the Pump, Removing the two Inspection Covers, and Removing the Tranny Cover.

Then using solvent, brushes, rags, and dirty hands and arms I "washed" out all three chambers.

You can easily get to everything in the center (hydraulics), most all of the rear (differential), and a little of the front (tranny) chambers. Lots of nooks and corners for sludge, dirt, etc to hid in. GET IT ALL!!!! It is also a good time to check on the pump and lift for wear and tear.

The gaskets are cheap and if needed replace the tranny shift boot.

PUT BACK TOGETHER, FRESH FLUID, and WOW. READY FOR ANOTHER FIFTY YEARS<: JIM
