I have been doing a little rebuilding on my 8N.
I noticed the sediment bowl was leaking around the top of the bowl (this is a new bowl),tried to
shut it off with the cutoff valve, found the valve
leaked when shut off.Can not get it to stop leaking.Found that the bowl has an "O" instead of the cork gasket.Could this make a difference?

Yeah for some reason the new shutoff valves and sediment bowls give a lot of us problems. I was having leaking problems with a new shutoff and finally got frustrated and used a pair of pliers to tighten it down. Darned if that didn't get it to working. Now it shuts off by hand just fine. I guess it just needed to seat into the seal or something. The cork bowl gaskets are a real aggravation too. Go to NAPA and get a NAPA 730-9506 neoprene gasket to replace it with. They last forever.
Good Luck, Lee

Cork gaskets should be soaked in water or light oil before use.

Check the packing nut.. might be that vs the oring. generally the flat oring seals way better than the cork. However I finally started cutting my owh out of thick gasket paper.. never had leaks since..

Hi Arthur,
I bring this up because it happened to me when I replaced the filter valve assembly. The assembly had provisions to install the valve wheel on either side of the casting. The back side of the casting has a plug in it. The plug was loose on mine and leaked. Never thought to tighten it. Dumb on my part but I hope I have solved your problem!

I've had 1 that leaked no matter what gasket was in it and it was not from the valve stem. I've seen 2 more not shut off completely even with the valve screwed in (did I mention these were all new?). I think these new replacments are junl but that is just my opionion. I have 1 in service with cork, 1 with neopreme seal from normal outlets. With the neoprene I almost run out of adjustment trying to tighten it up. The cork does ok until you take it off for a week or so, the cork dries out and shrinks and is un usable.
Good luck, most tractor stores in my area have the cork on the shelf
