I am going to buy some land and want to clear it with a brush hog I would like to buy a small tractor like a Ford 8n,9n, or Jubulie I live in Upstate NY. Are these tractors good for a brush hog and plowing snow or would an Oliver or Massey be better ? I like the oldies but am open to suggestions. Where is a good plce to look e-bay ?? Thanks a bunch

If you are looking for a keeper / worker, I suggest you get a 660/860 or better yet 661/861

These tractors will have 2 stage clutch, and live pto ( live hyds on NAA and up ). Some may have power steering.

The **0 are 1955-1958 models.. the **1 are 1958-1962 models.. past that the thousand series starts. Generally the 8/6 models are only a few hundred bucks more than the NAA / N series.. but work alil harder..etc..

Im a ford man, like the nostalgia, have restored 4. For a few more bucks you can get a real working tractor with live power and power steering. Look hard at tractors with 35 or more horse power, and live power and power steering. Buy a ford if you want to be part of this great group.

At the top left of this page, you'll find a link to Photo, and classified ads, and an auction. I've seen many a good deal in your area. Wished I had time to drive and visit that area and take advantage of the prices and variety of old Fords up there. Lots of 9/8 N's, NAA's around here, but rare to find many hundered series for sale. N's are abundant with brush hog's and blades, so tells ya what they're best at these days. Live hydro is nice and there is an aftermarket addon thru Zane. I don't have his website handy. Google "Live Thang". I have used and abused my 50 8N and old 5' heavy duty brush hog. I have 2 more b/hs in case I want to get real serious. I've had more trouble with flats from the rough areas I've cut. HTH

First: congrats to you on how much you got done on Arthur today. Will you hook up the battery to do a proper oil pressure test or do you think the hand turning is sufficent? I can't remember way back to when that whole matter was first discussed. But I'm sure YOU have detailed notes....lol

Second: Have you checked out the link that the 50 tractors guy provided? I did, and there is an impressive array of tractor pictures on his site! Here's the link made clickable so it'll take you right there.

Thank you, Carl!!!! That's an impressive and awesome sight, isn't it? All those Ford tractors!

And thanks for your kind words about today's accomplishments. I feel so jazzed now! I won't get to work on Arthur tomorrow, but on either Thursday or Friday I'm going to put the battery back and do that compression test. Yep, I have the notes on it, but I need to restudy them and probably ask a question or two before I do it. (You know me!) Come to think of it, this probably means I'll run the test Friday and use Thursday to "prep".

Woops. Somewhere in here I need to get some "work" work done. I know! I can use my "Bufferin & Ben Gay Recovery Time" to do that! LOL

You think that's amazing? You should go to the Farmersville Exhibition in July!!!! I've gone two years in a row, scrapin' to go this year. Between Burt and George Tackaberry the eye candy is unreal!!! The best part is they are both class acts!!!!

See your other post up in the FORD forum you have a few good answers there. 8N do ok for what you want but, and this is a big one. A tractor with live PTO is safer and will do you better then the 8Ns that don't have live any thing.

Well in there day and time they did make god little tractors but, once they came out with the live hyds and live PTO the 8Ns just aren't up to the jobs they once where. Don't get me wrong I have 2 of them but I prefer the bigger tractors I have with live power. Now the Nerd I can't do with out but its sort of a differant 8N then most.

That is what we call the 8N we have with the Scout backhoe on it. I think I sent you a picture of it. We call it the nerd because its all it can do to move around with all that extra metal hanging all over it. LOL

Hi there! I think a Ford N or NAA would be just perfect for your purposes. Plenty of the guys on this list plow snow with their N or Jubilee (NAA) with a backblade, although some use a front loader. I know that the NAA has some hydraulic features the N's don't have that make it easier to use them sometimes, but I have to say (on behalf of the Ns) that they are VERY fine tractors! Also, lots of guys bushhog with the tractors you've listed. To me, the best thing about one of these old Fords compared to any other tractor is that you have Ford engineering to begin with, lots of parts and book availability because of how many were made to begin with and how popular they still are, and (for the same reason) can use many different types of implements. They're fun to work on, reliable, and have excellent dispositions. :-) I have heard some of the long-timers on this forum say that if you really do not enjoy tinkering with old iron, you shouldn't get an antique tractor. But to me, it's more than worth it to have all the history and quality of workmanship with the antique that you can't get in anything modern. Plus the tinkering is very cool! I don't know if this helps you make a decision, but I can't see how you could ever regret getting an N or an NAA. As to where to look, there is a link on this site to tractors for sale. I see them all the time up in your part of the country. Check out "photo ads" and "classified ads" in the list of blue links just to the left of your original message. And if you can find a tractor show to go to, you can see them in operation, talk to people who have them, and learn more as well as maybe meet people who have what you want for sale. Good luck!! If you do wind up with an N or NAA, be sure to come back to this forum if you need any advice. The people here are AWESOME! --Dawn

wow, most say to stay away from the N's but man I sure do like the looks of them and I love to tinker with motors and have a garage and lots of tools. I guess they say because there is no live pto that they are a danger but cant you put in a clutch release ??

Drop me an e-mail and I'll send you a picture or 2 of why 8Ns can be trouble. The 801 or 601 series tractors are about the same size as the 8Ns but are a lot better tractors and they have live hyds and some have live PTOs

Well as I said I do have 2 of them. One os a front mount and the other is a side mount. But for almost every thing I do an 8N just isn't enough tractor for my jobs.

You can rig it up so it has just what you need. You use "the Zane Thang" that was invented by a fellow who posts on this very forum! The link below is to a discussion just a little while back where I was trying to understand the situation you are asking about. The guys explain it and how it works.

I have to add, I think the reason people might tell you to stay away from the Ns is that they're just jealous of how cool they are. :-)

Ns are nice little tractors but, if I had to depend on one for all I do I'd be 10 years behind and a lot of $$ more in the hole. I do have around 20 and use them all but really have to many for my 44 arces. When I hay I use 4 or 5 tractors, hook each one up to one piece of equipment and go that way I save a lot of time and headaches.

Wow! What a great set of implements! If you have a chance to ever post pics of your cultivator and 2-bottom plow, I would LOVE to see them. I am trying to decide which implements to look for. One thing I was trying to figure out was whether to get a 1-bottom or 2-bottom plow.

Your tractor will handle a 2 bottom 14 well. You will also need a disc. If you plow ground you also need to disc the ground after plowing and even a drag harrow is nice to have.
