9n hard to start!

I am having a hard time starting my 9N. I know my piston rings are worn, because my sparks plugs are fouling. I installed hotter plugs to fix that problem temporarily. I cleaned and rebuilt my carb, replaced my fuel filter, condenser, points, distributor cap, and coil.

In order to get my 9N started I have to repeatedly remove and brush my spark plugs. Sometimes I'll recheck to make sure I am getting fire to my plugs, so I remove one spark plug at a time and place the gap end on my manifold, and check to see if there is a spark when I push the starter button. When I have any of the spark plugs out to check for fire, my 9N starts up immediately, as if I am not having any problems at all. I immediately have to shut the tractor off with the key. Why does it do that?

Just a possibility! With one plug removed, the engine should crank a tad faster, Maybe this increase in starting speed allows it to start better. Could be that the battery cables need some attention. Just a thought. albe

Hey guys! I checked to make sure my wires were going to the proper cylinder, from the dist. cap to the spark plug. They are all correct. I know the dist.cap and rotor cant be installed upside down? And the rotor rotates in the proper direction.
Am I correct on checking the firing order?
Any additional advise would be great!

Adrian

Adrian..... I read you replaced your ignition points. New frontmount ignition points are known to slip and loose gap and cause bad sparkies. A new screw will help solve that problem..... .Dell

Hi Adrian! I put in a Japanese export engine in a friends truck and it wouldn't start until I pulled a plug and it would start, put it back in and no start. scratched my head until I removed the oxygen sensor and on a fluke tried to start it. it started right up. catalytic converter was completely plugged up. doubt that is your problem, but stranger things have happened. more likely the wires wrong. just thought I would share that. Yea, like Paul said the N will run with the plugs wired in the wrong order, and that would explain the fouling.

A guess would be that the firing order is muxed ip. It should be 1-2-4-3 but will run if wrong.
