Marty, thaks for the schematic you sent me a few days ago. Mine is basically what you have drawn there. But my alternator (12VDC) only has one lead coming out of it, there's no P1 or P2. So, does this schematic still apply?

Does the feedback come from the alternator feed & coil feed being connected to the same terminal block? I confirmed with my VOM that the key switch is making/breaking the connection to the coil but just as before the tractor keeps running when I turn it off. I know it has to be something simple that I'm missing here.

Also, what size or value of diode do I need & where do I hook it up?

Also, the schematic doesn't show the external ballast resistor which my tractor has. It's attached inline on the lead to the coil.

Thanks for your help & input.

Gary Baton Rouge

I got the drawing from my old fords.com. I am no expert at charging systems. However it does sound like you have a one wire alternator if so run the one wire back to your solenode where your positive battery cable hooks in that should keep it from feeding your coil. Like OLd said it may not charge until you rev it up pretty high.
Hope this helps Marty

Your coil feed should not be connected directly to the same terminal block as your alternator. The coil feed is connected through the ballast resister to one side of your ignition switch. The other side of your ignition switch is connected to the terminal point where your alternator wire and your positive battery post is also connected. HTH...Ron

Does your alternator have what looks like a plug, probably black where the 1 and 2 terminals would be if so you have a one wire alternator and with that all you have to do is run the wire from the battery post on the alternator to the battery hot lead at the soliniod or amp gauge. Problem with those alternators is the fact that you have to rev the engine up pretty high to get them to start chargeing.
