I have been following the saga of Arthur since the inception. I don"t post all that often because usually you have been given a ton of advice that I don"t feel that I can improve on by the time I check the board. If you don"t mind let me give you my impressions and opinions that may or may not be worth exactly what you are paying for them. First this board is populated by all kinds of Nthusiasts from the greenest of green to guys that can rebuild one of these machines blindfolded with one hand tied behind his back, some like myself only want to keep our machines going for another few years and repair only when neccessary, others want a totally pristene tractor and shudder with disgust at anything non-original or farmerized. Personnally I do not think that you have a bearing problem. # 2 valve is probably stuck open and the oily condition on the plug is caused by oil being forced past the bad valve seal. You should remove the head and exhaust manifold before even thinking about the bottom end of the engine. The exhaust manifold is supposed to be held on with BRASS nuts which will self destruct upon removal as they are designed to do in order to save the stud. Studs and brass nuts are available at any of the vendors of Nparts. Once you have the head and manifold off you remove the valve cover plates on the side of the block. Turn the engine over with the starter and observe what is going on. If the #2 valves are stuck either open closed or somewhere in between it will be redily apparent. You will also be able to observe the sleeves surronding the pistons for vertical movement. There should be none. Marvel Mystery Oil, Auto transmission fluid, or brake fluid are great solvents for freeing stuck valves, liberally squirt some on the valve stems. Although not really recommended you may also tap gently on the valve head with a rubber mallet or block of wood, (never a regular hammer). Once you have eveything opened up you can make you"re diagnosis and go on from there. As to the oil leaks I can almost guarantee that you are leaking from the governer and the front rope seal. In most cases the governer can be corrected by putting a piece of emery cloth on a sheet of window glass and sanding the casing flat. The front rope seal is more troublesome and requires dropping the oil pan. Mine leaks and since I have a working rat tractor I just keep an eye on the oil level. Remember that if you do decide to drop the pan that it is stuctural part of the tractor frame and the tractor must be blocked under the transmission to do it. The rope seal does not have to be replaced with an original one of Fords autos used a regular rubber seal that fits and is much easier to use ( do an archive search of rope seal and somewhere you will find the one to use.) As I stated in the beginning these are my impressions and opinions on your project and some will probably disagree on many of my points. Feel free to accept or reject any or all of my recommendations. I just don"t want you to get deeper into this project that you need to untill all of your options are explored.

I think Arthur is lonely and needs a companion to teach him how to run and play. Even not so nice but a runner. Then you can be at ease working on him and learn twice as much. Could be Arthur jr. or II.

Thanks Dave. :-) Unfortunately, the only way there could be an Arthur Jr. at this point is if a stray one followed me home! Ah me. Fortunately, there is Arthur. And he's pretty cool. (giant grin) --Dawn

Your guess could well be right on the mark or out in left field who knows till she tells use. But she still needs to pull the engine to fix the clutch problem either way. So why not have a look see in the pan at the same time and make sure all is well or not well in there. Nope not disagreeing with you or agreeing with you LOL

Rear seal does not have a replacement other than the original to my knowledge. Stuck clutches have on occaision been freed by a certain amount jerking and pulling on the tractor. Truthfully I missed the stuck clutch part and have never have experienced one personnaly.
