Question about four ring pistons

I have been reading about the four ring piston versus a three ringer.. The folkes that have the four ring piston, what would happen if the would not install the fourth ring? Or is not possible to do this?

Don"t normally respond on this board but couldn"t resist this. Back in the 60"s there was a Ford Tractor dealership in Iowa that did this very thing lots of times. I don"t recall any bad effects from it. I worked there 8 years. Just had to comment on this .

Quest..... ..ever hear the term "piston slap"? That means the piston are rubbing the cylinder walls. And the reason they "rub" is because they are NOT being held inplace by the piston rings and the natural change from lineal piston stroke to crankshaft rotational torque by the piston rod places an angular moment against the piston wall.

There is also the "false" economy of NOT replacing the sleeves and just using oversize rings. And now you want to further "economize" by useing only the $18 3-ring kit instead of the $22 4-ring kit.

Byte the bullett, eather the 4-ring piston/sleeve rebuild kit or the BETTER 3-ring piston/sleeve rebuild kit sells for the SAME DOLLAR. 3-ring pistons are more EFFICENT. There must be a reason, all modern engines use 3-ring pistons..... ....Dell

I really don't understand what the difference would be. My thought was if you take a four ring piston and do not install the bottom ring wouldn't you end up with a three ringed piston??

Also what keeps a three ring piston from not "slapping"??

I am just trying to get a understanding ..

I agree with you. There is no difference in skirt diameter between a 3- and 4-ring piston, so no slap should be present. The 4th ring is simply for better control of oil consumption.
