Hello, I really need some ideas. I purchased a Ford 8N at an auction last year and in the middle of running it shut off. It acted as though it ran out of gas. It didn't, I cleaned the carb, new plugs and wires, and cleaned the dist. cap. I can't get the darn thing to start. I am the first to admit that I am stupid so I could really use some help. I have no idea how to trouble shoot this problem. Thanks, and any help is appreciated.

Rick, it might be that the IGNITION switch is bad... a quick check would be to connect a jumper wire across the switch terminals. It should start if it isn't all flooded.

Do the easy stuff first. duey

The guy who sold me my tractor didn't even know the gas valve had a reserve feature. Tractor quit and would not start obviously there was still gas in the tank, but it was not making it to the carb. I cranked the fuel valve open a few more turns (that opens reserve port which is lower in the tank) and it started right up.

A few weeks later it did the same thing. Just quit running and would not start. That time it was no spark at any plug. After testing or replacing everything in the ignition circuit it turned out to be a bad coil.

If it's getting gas and sparks and still won't start, it's time to dig a little deeper. Might be a broken timing gear. Is the rotor in the distributor turning when you crank it?

Ok front or side mount distutor?? Have you checked for spark?? If it was running and just died its probably something simple like a switch, coil or condeenser. For me to help I need more info, like I sadi front or side mount 6 or 12 volts and any thing else you can think of??? Sorry long distance trouble shooting is not easy and we need all the inf owe can get to help you

If you have gas flowing out of the pipe when you disconnect it from the carb then unscrew the right angle fitting from the carb as it has a screen in there that can get clogged up

Rick. First, make sure battery is fully charged. You didn"t say if it was 6v or 12v and if it had a front or side distributer. It doesn"t really make that much difference because the fix is all the same.

1. there are only three things needed to run this engine. Fuel, spark, compression. For the moment, we will presume that the compression is ok.

2. Take the air-intake off of the carburetor and spray some starting fluid into the throat and, turn on the key, and try to start. If it starts mementarily, then you are not getting fuel. Take the fuel line off at the top of the carburetor and see if you have fuel flowing. If not, then you have a stopped up valve in the bottom of the fuel tank. Happens all of the time. Or if there is a filter, then it might be stopped up. Clean and make sure fuel is flowing.
If you have fuel at the top of the carburetor, then you have a dirty carburetor and you should take it off again, take it apart and soak it 24 hours in solvent.

If it doesn"t start using starting fluid, then you have a spark problem. Run a wire from the battery post that is NOT attached to the chasis (ground) (Neg, if 6v, or Pos. if 12v) to the top of the coil. Try to start again. If it starts, then you have either a bad ignition switch or bad ballast resister, or faulty wireing. If it doesn"t start, then you have isolated it down to either the points, capacitor, coil, or faulty wireing at these points.

If it starts at any point, then you have isolated the problem and you will have to remove the wire that you ran from the battery to the top of the coil. If none of the above helps, then we will have to deal with the compression...And don"t think of yourself as stupid. You bought yourself a nice Ford tractor didn"t you?. We all had to start someplace and with help from our friends on this board, anything can be repaired... Let us know what is happening....JMHO...Ron

Man talk about fast help..You guys don't mess around. THANK YOU !!!! I can tell you all this so far. 1) It is 6V, it is a front mount distributor, The engine will crank, it just does not sound like it is firing. I pulled the line above the carb and gas is getting to the carb. I have not check the other line. As soon as the weather clears I plan to take these replies and fix may tractor.. I will post an update.. Again, thank you all very much.

I"m sure others have done this-but just in case here"s something that works for me---my technique for helping in starting during cold weather is that I drilled a .250 dia hole in the steel air intake pipe on the upslope leading to the airfilter which I keep closed using wide Industrial type rubber band. Just before trying to start the tractor, I peel back the band--shoot in some starter fluid--and bingo-it fires right up!The band is far enough from the heat to last a year or two and I don"t have to crank and choke the heck out of it!!It's a lot easier than pulling the tube off the Carb each time to give it a shot!.--PeP
