Got a call today from my partner siad he had a 9N for me to look at. Funny little thing, since it has a hand brake handle on the left side, farmerized I guess. Also seems to have a sherman tranny not sure yet if its a standrad/low or a standard/high. Ya I know most call them hi/low trannys but from what I have learnd that statement is almost nver true since its either a high and the normal tranny gears or a low and the normal tranny gears. Any body need a 9N I have to many tractors right now.

old,

The 1941 9N that we just finished restoring also has the hand handle on the left wheel brake. It is very simple and just clamps on the brake shaft but I don't think it is farmerized. It also has the overdrive Sherman. Makes for interesting road gear runs. I found out right away the toe-in was not set right. After I fixed that it is fine.

Reason I say farmerized is that the hand brke is welded on not bolted on.

It would be nice if everyone would use the same language when talking about the Sherman. "High-low" ought to refer to the combo Sherman which has the high range, low range and normal gears. (This is what my 8N has) But as you say, when some people say high-low they really mean high-normal, which really is incorrect. People also use step up and step down, which by the way, is the language used in the Sherman literature (see John Smith's site to see)And you also hear about "overdrive" to refer to the step up version. (Does that make the step down an "underdrive"? lol)
As far as usefulness, I would rate the high-low-normal combo as most useful, followed by the step down (good for woods work), and rate the step up the least useful, unless you have a desire to go down the road in step up 3rd gear completely out of control!

Dear old,

My dad bought a 2-n in 1953 and I still have it. It has the HIGH and of course Regular. As a kid I didn't know they even made one with a LOW. Anyway driving out in the field 2nd was toooo slow. Third was so fast and would not pull much , No power. Guess what overdrive 2nd gear was just about right. It was just about half way between straight 2nd and straight 3rd. Also since straight 3rd was only about 10 mph you didn't have much of a road gear. That is about 3 or 4 mph slower than an 8N. In overdrive 3rd you went up to about 15mph easy and had a good road gear. Anyway we have used the overdrive lots in our 3 speed 2n in the last 53 years. By the way I always enjoy reading your posts, OLD. Keep up the good work.

Hmm.. I was under the impression that the 'combo' hi-standard-low was more common that the overdrive hi-standard.. or the underdrives/creeper.. standard-low ??

Under drive or low which ever you want to call it. This one has the overdrive or high and the standard set up in it. Never have figured out why someone would want a overdrive in a 9N or even an 8N now the low or underdrive I could see.

My Grandad told me quite a few guys who bought the 9N or 2N would hire out to plow, mow, cultivate, etc. other folks places. Sometimes the other folks lived quite a ways from home, & I guess the 3-speed gearbox seemed like a slow crawl on the FM. The overdrive made a nice road gear(get home in time for supper!).
