I have a Howard unit on the work bench right now out of my 52 8N that has no known problems and am looking for parts, service and or installation instructions. Getting it off was a little bit of a pain and I see now why it tends to be cursed by some as to the design. I won't really be using the reduction unit so it will be in the straight through mode 99.9% of the time. I'd planned on just replacing the 2 bearing cups that pertain to the main transmission. Any recomendations out there as to taking it apart while I have it off and replacing the 2 main bearings on the unit itself or should I just bolt it back onto the main trans? Thanks to all who contribute to this discussion board. I use it almost every night to double check myself and research questins I have that just aren't in a book. Thanks Again.
Greg

I"m going to toss in two part numbers I remember from 1967 when they were already out of production: LS-10 and MS-10. Those were the two main bearings on the reduction unit, if my memory is working at all. The other replies are right on: for parts, you can"t get there from here. Good luck!

Dell / Jeff Thanks for the responses. Dell I constructed my sentence poorly, I'm OK on parts I was just looking for parts diagrams and service literature for reference material. The archives are a great help and I will continue to work my way through them.
Thanks
Greg

Here's the only parts diagram I have on the Howard. Got it from JohnUK over on the Ferguson board. Hope it helps.

Send me an email if you want me to send it to you as an attachment.

Hope you take lots of pics while you've got it out, assembled & disassembled. The only Howard pics I've seen are A.D.(after destruction).

Jeff

Greg..... ...general rule of old tractors: "iff'n it ain't broke, don't fixx-itt".

Iff'n you've been a long time lurker, you should know about the N-Board "archives" at the top of the page. The answer to your "Howard" gearbox questions can most likely be answered by doing a "search" of the archives.

Quick answer, NO ONE KNOWS where you can get Howard gearbox service/replacement parts, even the Howard company, which is now based in Australia instead of jolly ol'England.

While as a general rule, bearings are bearings. And they usually have important bitts engraved on them, like mfgr and p/n and you can usually go to an industrial "bearing house" for replacements or cross-references. This is NOT ALWAYS the case.

I once needed to replace the front wheel bearing on my 1969 BMW 2002; it had name "Timkin" and p/n readily readable. I took it into a bearing house and laid it on the counter and told the guy, I need one of these. Much to the entire bearing house staff amazement, it was NOT LISTED in enny of their books. I had to make a 100mile trip to the nearest BMW Dealer parts counter, who immediately laid one in my hands, along with the matching seal. And he didn't even haffta look-itt up..... ....I wish you well, the envious Dell
