During a cold snap last month I gave the old girl a shot of 12 Volts to start it. Have done this many times before with no ill effects but this time it ran for about 10 seconds and then quit - never to run again.

I checked and cleaned the points, put a different (old) coil on, checked for continuity across the resistor and to the coil, also across the ignition switch. Doesn't seem to be any spark of any magnitude. Loosened the line from the tank at the carb and gas flows freely.

Doesn't seeem like there is much else to check except the condenser and I had no spare.

Wouls appreciate any suggestions.

what is the condition of your ground wire? this will cuase you a problem like what have also. Change out your on/off switch make a new ground wire with a new end. Wire brush your bolt and the hole on the tractor where your ground wire connects. Worth a try, cheap fix if thats problem.

Rollie..... ....condensers are NOT LIKE lightbulbs, they just don't suddenly fail. And 12v don't hurt condensers, they're good for about 200v.

Howsomevers, even though you claimed you measured continunity "across the ignition switch", unless you have lab grade ohmmeter, that ain't gonnna tell ya much. But surprizingly enuff, even an el-cheapo voltmeter can measure the voltage drop across the ignition switch. Good switches will have zero-volts drop when ignition points are CLOSED. Iff'n ignition points are open, there is NO VOLTAGE DROP 'cuz its an open circuit. Understand? Kierchhoff's Law still rules.

You can approximate points closed by shorting/grounding the squarecan ignition coil top terminal. Pre-connect yer voltmeter across yer ignition switch and quickly short/ground yer ignition coil top terminal. Your "infamous ballast resistor" will get VERY HOT FAST so you haffta do it fast. Understand? Still should have zero-volts across the ignition switch.

Or you can trust me, and replace yer weak sister ignition switch. $10 (cheap) You doubt? By-pass yer ignition switch with jumper wire..... ...Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

Hi..i had the same problem in Dec. Was plowing driveway when the tractor shut-off. Went thru everything twice. Found out a new set of spark plugs fixed the problem. Also these tractors are known for the cam gear to break. Does the rotor turn with the engine? If not, timing gears are broken. Try the plugs first..good luck.

Mine did about the same; my problem was with the float needle. I usually shut off the gas and let the bowl empty before I shut off the engine, but once i didn't and after a few days of -20 it ran for a while, quit and wouldn't start until after cleaning and rebuilding the carb. If you burned anything by jumping with 12 volts I wonder if it would have ran at all.

Does the engine turn over?

What is the voltage at the top of the coil with the key on?

New condenser fixed mine when he did just that in the middle of the field.
