I have a early 50-s 8N tractor that i want to convert to 12 volt using a G.M. 1 wire alternator.Which parts besides the generator and battery do i have to change , (coil, regulater, etc). Also any tips or a wiring diagram on how to complete this task. Thank you.

Randy,

Check out my webpage on my 12 volt conversion.

I can't recommend the 1 wire alternator; I think the 3 wire is a much better setup for this application, and only takes a couple minutes longer to hook up. My experience with the 1 wire GM alternators has been quite aggrivating. They have a hard time exciting at the low rpm's that the N tractors run at.

Good luck on your conversion!

Brian

Hi Brian. I agree, the one wire set up really doesn't work well on an N. Mine wouldn't excite even at full throttle sometimes. I used the diode with the three wire setup, it works perfectly.

N - joy.

If you are going to keep the original 6 volt coil, then you will need a 12 - 6 volt dropping resistor. You do not use the mechanical external regulator. As the name implies, you would use 1 wire going to the positive side of the ammeter from the alternator. You can discard all the wires going to the generator and voltage regulator. Change the battery polarity for negative ground. If you have a side mount, change the two wires to the coil. (negative to the distributor and positive to the dropping resistor. If front mount do not worry about it, since you cannot easily change polarity to the coil. Remember on one wire systems, you will not start charging until you rev the puppy up..

What Claus said

Also you are going to need something in the circuit to prevent electrical back flow and let you shut the thing down. Switches, light bulbs, and lately turn signal flashers have been advocated at one time or another.

Your mileage may vary

Not needed on a 1 wire alternator.

For detailed instructions on how to convert go to the following website:>Link
and>Link click on the "8N Frequently Asked Questions" Tab. I think the 3rd question gives step-by-step instructions on how to convert.
