It would seem that despite our drought, cattails retain water somehow. The 8N maneuvered in the bowl of the pond admirably, However -- when I backed the box blade into a stand of reeds..... .. Game Over !!! She sank so fast, there was no time to react, AG tires immediately clogged with a chocolate pudding/Play-Doh mix, of foul smelling goo. Tried all the old tricks and basically I was highsided on the oil pan and rear axles. Crushed the exhaust -- Oh geez! Chain and 3/4 ton pick-up ,, didn't even budge it. Towing service came out with a wrecker and had to go get a winch truck they use to get cars out of water. Expensive lesson learned and I will follow the advice of chemical eradication with Rodeo. Stay on Dry ground!!!!!

Sort of reminds me of what I did with my 8N years ago. Was doing some digging to build a pnd and put it all the way down to the axles. I did get lucky I just sat on the backhoe and turned it 180 and drove out. I know I cheated a little, but it did take and hour to turn it that 180

Your story reminded me of something I did like that once. My wife and I bought some property on a power company lake about 23 years ago. Shortly afterwards the company let the lake level down about four feet which exposed a bunch of sandy shoreline.

For whatever reason, I decided to drive my little chevy S-10 4x4 truck onto what looked like hard ground.

I got out of the truck to walk over to where my wife was standing and noticed she had the weirdest look on her face. I turned around to see that the truck had sunk past the frame. It happened just all of a sudden.

Fortunately there were several large tractors in the area and it took them all to break it free and drag it out. It wasn't expensive but it taught me a big lesson.

Sorry to hear. My 2 acre pond in Bonham is completely dry on the shollow end as well and I have been thinking about digging it down as well. Your lesson may save me some trouble.

Dan -

See if you can find what I think was called a "Slip". Hook it onto a long cable or chain and then have someone drive the tractor while you work the Slip. Hard work but it can drag out about 1/3 yard of dirt at a time.

Might have a pickup on the other side of the pond to drag the Slip back into position.

My dad helped build a lake using a Slip and a team of horses and got $2 a day for his work and the team of horses. This was ca.1935.
