My baby purrs like a kitten normally but if I shut her off or accidently stall her, she wont restart unless I let her set for several minutes. After she sets awhile she starts up and continues to purr. Acts like some sort of vapor lock but havent found that to be the case yet. Doesnt appear to be overheating. Anybody have a idea?

Sounds like weak spark. Don't forget that your "infamous ballast resistor" is really a varistor (resistance varies with temperature). When cold, it has a low resistance to provide full voltage/current to the coil for hotter spark. After running for a while (probably a short while) it gets hot and presents a higher resistance to reduce the voltage/current to the coil for longer coil life. The stronger sparks help starting -- and are not as necessary while running. Your waiting a few minutes probably lets the varistor cool off enough to give you hotter sparks.

Does your baby crank slow? Might be marginal battery low charge rate or overheating. DG

It's my understanding that a "vapor lock" can be created anytime that a gas line is in close enough proximity to the hot engine so that the line heats up and creates a vaporus restriction to the flow of fuel. The "N's" have such an arrangement. Old mechanics would put a 'spring-loaded' clothes pin on the fuel line at the point where it was nearest the engine. The clothes pin would act like a 'heat-sinc' and absorb the engine heat. I have always used this idea and so far have never had a vapor lock. Does it work? Don't know. And there is always questions to be answered when someone sees the clothespins. JMHO...Ron

Robin..... ..this is "clasic" BAD ignition switch characteristics. Change yer weaksister ignition switch. $10 (cheap)..... ..Dell

Next time this happens, pull a spark plug wire and have a spare spark plug with a wide gap ready to test spark. I keep one made up with a gator clip on it to ground it with.. then pull a sparky wire and hook it up. If no sparks, or weak orange spark..cound be anything form marginal coil.. to dirty electrical connections, to a bad ignition switch. You can bypass the ignitinon switch to check for that as well as clean all alectrical connections. If that still doesn't help it.. I'd repalce the coil as the last option.

Thanks for all of the ideas. I have checked the spark and it looked good during the point it wasn’t starting so theoretically that should eliminate the ignition switch and maybe the coil although it still could be weak. The vapor lock theory looks pretty good right now, I think I will try the cloths pin idea, if nothing else it will create some interesting conversation when someone sees it. I do appreciate all the interest THANKS

cold be a vapor lock ,if copper fuel line was it is a good possibilty, more than likely it's the coil breaking down and heating up
