After my engine rebuild, I haven't been able to get my 46 2N into gear. I've tried adjusting the clutch linkage, but I can't seem to get it so that the linkage moves far enough when the pedal is depressed to fully disengage the clutch. Do I have to do any brake adjustments, as they are linked? Is the pedal supposed to be spring loaded to return to the up position? Any ideas? Also, I'm looking for any helpful hints on reassembling the starter on my Craftsman lawn tractor. How do you hold the brushes in place until you get the case closed?
Thanks in advance, Rick

Don't know NAA's and hate to guess but I assume you are wrenchhead enough that you at least inspected the clutch while you had it apart. If that is true it is unlikely to be as simple as a stuck clutch. If all of the linkage looks like the pictures in the book and doesn't have a great deal of slop then I fear that your throw out bearing has come "disconnectolated" from your clutch release fork. I hope I am wrong.

As to the motor brushes I have usually gotten it done with toothpicks in the brush holders.

Your mileage may vary

I bet your clutch is just stuck from sittin' all the while you were rebuilding. I'd try putting it in gear first then starting it. Pulling it with another tractor while in third gear should do it. Once running drive around a while in gear with the clutch pressed down. May free it up.

I fashioned a pair of paperclips to hold the brushes in place while reasembling a convertable top motor. My first attempt failed because I hadn't taken into consideration all the obstacles to removing the clips once the motor was together. I had better luck the next time. They were quite intricate by the time they worked so I saved them in case the need arises again. And it did.
Sorry, no help on the clutch problem.

Hope this helps.
