My little girl brought home a bonnie cabbage plant for a third grade cabbage growing contest. It did not really seem very interesting untill she mentioned the prize $1000. Any N folks have sugestions for growing giant cabbage. The plant is a hybrid that is said to grow larger than a basket ball. The largest cabbage takes the prize.

dipel or thuricide(sp?) will keep the worms out. mix some soap with the spray to make it stick to the leave, otherwise the spray will just roll off and not stick. Good Luck.

Add this to all the others' imfornation. Goat manure in the soil when turning the garden over and use lots, see if you can find a goat farm the fresher the better. Step 2 take a 5 to 10 gal. pail and make fresh goat manure water use once every 5 days . Done proper and they will grow like Giants. Don"t forget to cultivate the soil every 10 days. Good Luck this has alwys worked great

The wood ashes keep the slugs out of the cabbage in a wet spring. Cabbage likes good composted manure (get a bag at the garden store) cool nights & plenty of water. We usually plant cabbage & spring collards & salad when we plant Irish potatoes, on St Patricks Day. After the plants get going, pull dirt to them (hill them) and watch for loopers & worms; you will need to dust them w/ Sevin or BT. Now, here is the trick: Peters plant food or Miracle Grow if you only have a few heads (stuff is expensive) or ammonium nitrate fertilizer (be careful w/ it; just sprinkle a little bit around each plant & hoe it in) Lastly, as the weather warms & the heads start growing, they will split if they get too big.

I remember when my parents (88+ and 93+ years old now) had a pretty good size garden, they always took the cold wood ashes out of the stove and put them around their cabbage plants. I would guess that cabbage must like soil that is alkaline in nature. Be a good idea to check that out. Just thought I'd mention that even tho I have never grown a cabbage in my life.
