I have an 8N that has ben changed to twelve volt"s and I am having problems with no spark firt I changed the coil. Is the twelve volt conversion a good Idea ? The tractor ran for a day and then again no spark , suspect coil again !

You didn't mention whether you'd actually looked inside the dist. Your points may have closed down. Also do you have power to the coil? The notoriously rotten ignition switch is famous for causing "now I'll run, now I won't" symptoms. That said, if you are unlucky enough to have a front mount dist, (like me) there are a couple of caveats. The aftermarket 12v coils are of dubious quality, causing some people to actually go to the trouble of epoxying a coil wire into the shell of a burned out coil so they can use an external coil of known quality. And #2, Most coil problems are caused by improper ballast resistors, resulting in excess voltage at the coil, although this usually results in burned points first. So now we've come full circle: What do your points look like?

12v is a good idea if you need the 12v for an implement.. or jumping purposes.

Now.. on to your problem. You don't mention side or front mount coil. There are different ways to wire and parts involved.. etc. So post back.

Need to know coil voltage, resistors used, if any?, and distribuitor type.

Alternator or generator?

Yes I have a front mount dist and a alternator the tractor just backfire and quit no spark again. I will have to check the points but the problem seems the same as the firt wich was two days ago the coil only fixed it for a half of a day .

12v alternator..and front mount coil.

That means you need either a 12v front mount coil plus an extra half ohm of resistance inline ( 2 pack of radio shack # 271-131 1-ohm resistors tired in parallel ).. or you need the oem 6v coil, plus the oem ballast resistor.. plus an 8ne10306 dropping resistor.

If you do not run the correct resistances.. you can burn coils and points... If you run too much resistance.. you will have weak sparkies.

There is nothing wrong with a 12v conversion when done properly..what resistor setup are you using,12v coil or 6 volt?? give us some more info and we can help you..
