9N Cutout Relay?

This newbie is trying to figure out why his 9N won't start. I have a new battery and have traced the voltage along the wires. The resistor block and coil have 6V but the cutout relay does not have 6V on the starter side (with the key on, the clutch down, and the starter button pushed). Is it a valid assumption that this is the reason and the cutout relay needs to be replaced? Anything else I should look at or replace? Thanks.

??Starter side of the cutout relay??

Your cutout relay goes between your 3 brush 1-wire genny, and your amp gauge...

On the 9n/2n, a wire from the battery goes tot he starter switch, and then another wire from the other side of the starter switch to the starter.

So.. what exactly are you trying to figure out?

The start switch is mechanical. you have power on one side.. and when it makes contact you have power to the starter.

The cutout will have battery power on one side.. and the genny side will not have power unless the engine is running.

I think you better check your wire diagram...

I used this diagram from www.tntwebdevelopment.com/tff/images/diagram.gif which looks correct for my 9N except that I don't have lights. So if the cutout relay is the part in the middle, then what is the part called that is to the right of the words "cutout relay" and interfaces with the starter button? That is the part that doesn't have 6V on the starter side...

I really like this schematic. Would like to get one for 1949 8N. Tried the address you mentioned in your reply, but could not get it to go through. This schematic is very clear and precise. The best I have ever seen. Please E-Mail me if at all possible. Thank you very much.

'"cutout relay" and interfaces with the starter button.'

That would be the starter switch. You will only get 6v on the starter side of the switch if you are actually pushing the starter button -- and even then you will get something less than six volts because of the current drain due to the starter trying to spin. You do know that your gearshift HAS to be in neutral in order to push the starter button all the way down (its a safety thing).

Thanks. Yes, I had it in Neutral, had the clutch in and pushed the button. Looks like I need to find a new starter switch and put it in. (Is the button just below the steering wheel called the starter button?)

Yep. That button on the transmission cover near yur gear shift is the starter button. (Unless you have a really early 9n where the starter button is on the dash). You can test iffn the switch is bad by jumpering around it. Make sure that your trans is in neutral. Then jump from the negative (hot) terminal of your battery directly to the big stud on the starter. If your starter motor spins then i would guess that your starter switch is bad. You could also have bad connections on the battery/starter switch/starter motor/ground strap.
