Some people I know bought an old building where they used to make palletts and wooden boxes. There are three 55 gallons of this stuff stored on the primises. It ia wood preservative and according to what I read is very toxic to humans and animals!

Anybody want it for free to haul off????

Can you believe that Penta treated posts was supposed to be a safe replacement for Crecote treated posts??? My dad hauled both for several years for a local merchant. The plant was in Panama, OK.

You should be able to find an MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet)on the internet. That will tell you everything you want to know about it.

Oh gee! The name alone is scary - that combination of terms indicates a seriously toxic brew. I think I remember your son is a chemist, right? You might ask him to get on the case and throw a little weight around if the previous owners won't come get it. I think they intentionally dumped your friend with a serious, serious problem because they know what it is.

I did call my son John and he said don't touch it. Don't smell of it and don't take it!

PCP is what he called it. I know you remember that term.

He said what ever we did not to feed it to laboratory rats! Makes them sick!

No lie! LOL

I sometimes work with Indigenous peoples from the Arctic, where PCPs have wound up in the food chain. Many of those people have real high levels of the chemical in their body tissues. It makes them pretty darned sick, too. Kills them, mostly.

Are you sure you're not talking about PCB's in the food chain, instead of penta?

PCB's are poly chlorinated biphenyls. They were used in the electrical transformers you see on top of poles. The accumulate in the fat cells of animals and "bio-magnify" to the larger carnivores. BAD STUFF.

PCP #1 is penta chloro phenol. Used for treating wood. Replacement for creosote. Being phased out as it is toxic. BAD STUFF.

PCP #2 is phenyl cyclohexane pyridine. Also known as phencycladine or "angel dust". Horse tranquilizer used as a recreational drug. Users become super man and jump off buildings. BAD STUFF.

8N tractor. Fun little old tractor. Very addictive to restore and operate. GOOD THING.

Good example of why you shouldnt spread bum information.Penta is a wood presevative.dont dip your self in it, dont drink it.PCBs were used in capacitors, tranformers etc.

I know EXACTLY what I said in reply to dan hill, 02-02-2006 02:01:15
I did not mean PCB, though I appreciate the thought. But I resent you saying I am "passing bum information'. I may not know tractors very well, yet, but I am a scientist and when I say something like this I know what I am talking about. PCP is a chlorinated hydrocarbon. One of the by-products of its manufacture is dioxin. Dioxin and many of the forms of chlorinated hydrocarbon are categorized as Persistant Organic Pollutants, often called POPs for short. They are "organic" pollutants because they are HYDROCARBONS. That's what you are made out of, ok? HYDROCARBONS. But yours are not chlorinated. So if you get some chlorinated hydrocarbons -- or other "POPs' in your system, whether through water, air, or direct contact, it is absorbed into your body and becomes part of it. Now if your exposure is a one-time thing and of minimal duration, PCP will leave fairly soon. Do we know how long that takes? Not really. Where does it go while it's in you? Well, the liver is one major place. Well guess what? When it gets into water, it goes into the livers of water-living animals - like fish. And guess what else? If you eat a diet very high in fish, you get lots of not-one-term exposures to the substance. And guess what else? The highest concentrations of these substances is seawater, because that's where everything winds up. YOU might not have trouble with PCP where you live, because you go to the Wal-Mart and buy beef to eat, and you only handle wood treated with this crap every so often. But that does NOT mean that it isn't a problem to anyone else on this planet. And just because YOU are ignorant of the situation does not mean that *I* am passing along false information.

Dawn,

Did you know Splenda (the new sweetener out there) is made of halogenated hydrocarbons?

Those of us that know what PCP, PCB, TCDD, etc... can do to us are SHOCKED that this stuff is legal, not even to mention that people voluntarily put it down their throat.

Yep. That's why I ask your advice on fixing tractors. I don't tell you what's what with fixing tractors, or tell you that you are spreading misinformation. I would appreciate the same courtesy.

PCP is a horse tranquilizer that dopers use. They have trouble getting the dose right. We know chemicals are dangerous,I just dont jump off the deep end over it.A teenager died huffing gasoline from a snow mobile a few years ago near here.Drain oil can cause skin cancer, read the lable.A gallon of gasoline has the explosive power of 14 sticks of dynamite.Suprised you will go near a tractor. When it gets down to 20 below I wonder where global warming went. The posts about taking a loader off your tractor were good for a lot of laughs

Ok folks - now it is getting out of hand. There is no need to make this a personal bashing issue. There is a difference between ignorance and stupidity. An ignorant person is one who just has has not gained the knowledge on something. A stupid person CAN NOT learn.

Zane,
I would make the previous owner come get it. There are RCRA laws that if you give it away you will be responable "cradle to grave". I know it is a bad deal but it prevents company's from illegal dumping of chemicals.

Grave got the last word on this deal. I personally knew the man who owned the pallet mill and he has been dead for years. I used to fix his Ford tractors. He was a heck of a nice guy. I think this stuff was just left over from when they stopped production.

Sure wish somebody could use it. It is free for the taking!!!!

From the Nat'l Institute on Drug Abuse website,>Link

>Link PCP (phencyclidine) was developed in the 1950s as an intravenous anesthetic. It has been used in veterinary medicine but was never approved for human use because of problems that arose during clinical studies, including delirium and extreme agitation experienced by patients emerging from anesthesia. PCP is illegally manufactured in laboratories and is sold on the street by such names as angel dust, ozone, wack, and rocket fuel. Killer joints and crystal supergrass are names that refer to PCP combined with marijuana. The variety of street names for PCP reflects its bizarre and volatile effects.

That's NOT a wood preservative. It doesn't end up in the ocean, or in fish.

PCB's are Polychlorinated Biphenyls and you can read up about their persistence and long term health hazards at the EPA website:
Link

According to the website, "PCBs were used in hundreds of industrial and commercial applications including electrical, heat transfer, and hydraulic equipment; as plasticizers in paints, plastics and rubber products; in pigments, dyes and carbonless copy paper and many other applications."
