Over the last year of my 3 year 8N restoration I kept coming up short on small parts. A missing cap screw here, a spring there, etc. Overall maybe a dozen parts. Not a huge deal, but I was pretty organized, keeping disassembled parts separated in trays.

One day while cleaning up & re-organizing the shop I came across a rat's nest under one of the fender skins....there were all my missing parts!

Now, of course, the 8N is all back together & life is good.

Then, last month I was looking for my spare steering wheel for the 165(I kept it on the shelf w/ the extra steering wheel for the 8N). Well, the 8N wheel is missing. I've turned the shop over trying to find it.

Not sure I want to find that nest!

Jeff

Hey Jeff: How 'bout I send my 2 cats over your way? They love to take any shiny part I have laying around (like nuts and bolts) and "play" with them until they "disappear". I swear the 2 of them were soccer players in a previous life! Anyway, they could have helped you find that rat's nest and the rat. Don't think I want them helping you out to find the critter that got your steering wheel however !

I have the same problem with our barn cats... Added to that challenge are the other piles of parts for not only the 8N, but also a 1962 Beetle, a 1968 Ford pickup, a 1950 International grain truck and a VW-powered replica of a WWI biplane (Nieuport 11).

Who knows, I may end up with the first air-cooled 8N in history when I get done!

Same here! I've kept everything i've taken off. The old Tie rods, spindles, nuts, bolts. But when it came to installing the tank and hood, i couldnt find the sed bowl assembly! Now i've gone thru three new ones and they all leak. Wish I knew what happened to the original.

With the sediment bowl problem you may need to tighten the whole thing up where there is anything with threads. Especially the fitting that contains the packing for the shaft and shut off knob. You may also have to force the shutoff tighter than finger tight with a pliers to get it to actually shut off. Once you get the seal tight enough to seat it usually is OK for finger operation. Then go to NAPA and tell them you need a Napa Number 730-9506. It's a neoprene gasket to replace the cork bowl gasket that always leaks.
Hope that helps, Lee

I first posted that NAPA number several years ago. I do not recommend it any more as current gaskets are as thin as .050 and if you happen get one that thin it won't cut it. The originals were 3/16" thick. If you can get the 3/16" you are good to go.

Do you mean there is a specific 3/16" inch neoprene gasket at NAPA to ask for? Or that the bottom line is a 3/16" gasket, but you can't get that in neoprene any more? (Making sure, since I know this is something I'm going to have to make or buy.)

First of all I erred, ment to say 3/32" thick!!Sorry for the bad info folks!!
NAPA made a specification change on that gasket, I have no idea why, the new spec is .070 which may not be a problem so far as N's are concerned. But, all those NAPA gaskets I reveived over the last two years have varied widely from .049 to .064 thick and thats pretty thin. Likely they would seal a good sealing bowl but not one of those that are difficult to seal which was the reason for putting that post up several years ago! I have been in contact with NAPA several times on this issue and frankly I don't think they have a clue, they simply don't know! I'm still contacting them about weekly like a bee at their behind! My most prevalent argument with them is since they changed it from 3/32" they should have a cross reference to some other companys 3/32" thick gasket, they do not. Local NAPA folks exhausted the possible alternate NAPA's to no avail, they can't come close! If you have an old NAPA in your area there is a slim chance that they may have some old stock that are 3/32".

Thanks, Gaspump. I'll print this off and take it with me when I go to get one. Then they can not only tell me what they have or don't have, they can tell me why they are messing up! :-)

I think so, yes. They certainly do take things to their nests like that. Don't know about the steering wheel, though!
