8N noisy tappets?

I recently took over an early 8N ("48) to finish work on it. My brother had put rings in it and got the head shaved. I don"t know how much was taken off the head. Now the engine runs good and has plenty of power and good oil pressure but something is noisy as heck. To me it sounds like noisy lifters and at first I just figured it must be normal. Then I heard another 8N running and there was no such noise. I thought maybe it needed the valves adjusted and then I discovered it still has the non-adjustable tappets in it. Then I thought maybe the valves were hitting the head. I did a cold, dry compression test and got 115-120 on all cylinders. That seems pretty high to me and reinforced my suspicion that too much may have been shaved off the head. I pulled the head and found no evidence of valves or pistons hitting the head. So now I am stumped. I had used a stethoscope to determine that the noise was coming from the tappets or valves. Is it normal for the old non-adjustable tappets to be noisy? I"ve probably never heard another 8N with the non-adjustable tappets. The other 8N I mentioned that made no noise was a 52 model which would have the new style tappets. One more thing- the lifters appear to be oiling okay.

I have a one owner 52 and it came with Non adjustable lifters, I recommend you install adjustable lifters. When the valve lash izz set correct you will not here’em If the block has not been drilled for adjustment of the lifters you will need the tappet wrenches to adjust’em

When I got my 49 8n it had noisy tappets. When I had the engine rebuilt(due to a slipped sleeve in cyl #1 we found that the valve stems were either worn or ground too much as it had been overhauled sometime in the past. Put in the adjustable ones and its just as quiet as can be. It really rattled before the rebuild.-Bill

Have you gaged the valve clearance with a feeler gage?
