Is there a way I could pressure up the oil system on a 9N ford with out turning the engine over any. I was thinking about hook up a tank with oil to the preassure gauge line and then putting say 25PSI in the tank. Will that preassure up the oil system and lube all the crank/cam bearings or will it hurt the oil pump or just plain not work. Any ideas guys?? Thanks

You can use this method if you wish. I prefer using engine assembly lube on all bearing surfaces and moving parts as the engine is assembled. Don't forget to fill the sometimes difficult to prime oil pump with assembly lube too, pump will prime instantly with it. Assembly lube is oil soluable, positive lubrication and will not weep out in case you are looking at a couple of days from assembly to start up!

Well the deal on this engine is the oil pickup tube came off and I'm replaceing it but not pulling the engine all the way apart, so I wanted to get oil up and on and in every thing before I put the pan back on.

It works great! I do it to all new overhauls, you dont have to worry about priming and everything gets lubed good ahead of time.

Should work just fine, Old.

Years ago when I worked in the shop at a local auto parts store, we would pressure lube all engines that we rebuilt before sending them out.

We did this with a (then) commercially available tool made just for this purpose. It had a small tank, about one gallon that was about half full of 30W non detergent oil. The tank had a small hose connected to the bottom for connecting to the oil galley on the engine and a pressure regulator on top for connecting to shop air. after hooking it up we would adjust the regulator to about 20-30 psi and pump oil in until it began to come out of the rocker arms on OHV engines. We would manually turn the engine over about 3 or 4 turns while doing this.

I haven't seen one of those tools for years.

Old,
I don't see why you can't. They have made oil accumulators for engines for many years. They generally hold 3-4 Qts. at maximum oil pressure.

Go and buy a cheap pump-up garden sprayer for $8 or $10. Cut the nozzle off, and clamp on a length of hose connected to the oil gauge port in the block.

Put some engine oil in the sprayer, and pump 'er up.

I have posted this here before. It does work well, and it's CHEAP!

Introducing oil pressure anywhere after the pump might help but I'd think you would want to add a one-way valve because you might just flush rotten junk backwards through the oil filter into the oil pump. The oil will take the path of least resistance and might not do the bearings any good.

Years ago somebody made an oil accumulator device that attached to the oil pressure guage port on a V8 with a solenoid valve. When you turned the key to the acc position it released the solenoid valve and pre-oiled the engine. The system would recharge gradually while the engine was running. They claimed to eliminate all the wear and tear that occurs at start-up, but the system was always too expensive and complicated for me to get a warm fuzzy about.

Easiest thing to do would be to just pull the plugs and spin the engine over without any compression load. That way the only thing you have to wprry about is how long you spin the starter without a cool-down.

K.LaRue-VA,

"N" Fords have a bypass filtration system. There will be no "rotten junk " from the filter backflowing into the oiling system if pressurized by an external source.
