Well I set it up. Took an old air tank from a big rig, its only about a gallion in size. Hooked it up to the oil preassure gauge and put a quart of oil in the tank. Put in air and in about 15 minutes I had oil dripping out all the main and rod bearings. I then turned it over by hand and all seems well I hope. Just not sure I should have oil dripping out of the rod and mainbearings. What do you guy think is that normal??
Thanks

I always used lots of assembly lube putting the engine together. That stuff had enough viscosity to stick around until the oil pressure came up. But maybe assembly lube only works on tight-clearance racing engines?

Well I haven't taken this engine apart. The oil pick up tube broke and got ate up by the crank shaft. I'm got a new oil pick up tube and just wanted to make sure every thing is prelubed before I put the tube on and the pan back on. If I had it all the way aprt I would have coated evert thing with STP oil treatment, been useing that for years on engine I have rebuilt.

That is how I primed my 8N oil pump that had lost its prime, with a garden sprayer.

If a tractor is like the old ford cars, this was recommended in shop manuals to check bearing fit and clearance. I think drips were okay but a stream was too much and indicated excess clearance. All would depend on pressure and temperature and oil viscosity, too. DG

That's what I'd expect to happen if you pressurized the oiling system. Actually I thought to pump oil to the bearings and crank was the idea. I'd be more concerned if you didn't get oil from the bearings. Sounds good to me but others may know something I don't.
Later, Lee

Sounds like all you are doing is pre oiling the motor. WALT

Yep. Walt is right. All you're doing is pre oiling the motor. (the bearings dripping oil is correct behavior.) This excersize isn't going to do a thing about priming your oil pump or filling that pickup tube with oil. When you start that engine it will still take a bit of time for the pump to suck oil up the tube and begin to pump it to the motor.
