Went to start an 8N I have today for a guy that wanted to buy it. Well it wouldn't start, we pulled it and after about 1000yards it started up but was only running on 2 plugs. Pulled the plugs and put in another set, got it fired up again and then the guy pulled the rad. cap and out came oil and antifreeze mix. Guess the head gasket went bad, just put a new one on this summer. Then went to start the 9N that I had just put in a couple rod bearing and and oil pick up and it started to knock real bad. I'm about to give up on both of them and just part them out. What a day strikeing out all the way around. Thanks for reading just had to vent a little.

Sorry to hear about your bad day. I think that we all have them from time to time. I work on a lot of old Mustangs and sometimes I get one that I just want ot roll off of this 3000 foot clif and watch it break up on the way down. Of course you new that the fix on the 9N was mostly a hope so no big suprise there, but lets talk about the 8N. At the time you put the head gasket on, how well did you flush the radiator. If it has been sitting for a while, you could be seeing residual oil that got in there BEFORE you replaced the head gasket. Maybe work on the ignition system a little, get it running better, and run it for a few hours. Then see how bad the oil in the radiator looks. Maybe it will be OK. I hope you have good luck with it.

By the way, when you put the head gasket on the 8N, did you retorque the head after running it and getting the engine up to normal operating temperature? Try retorquing the head cold, the crank it up and get it up to operating temperature, shut it down and retorque the head while the engine is still hot. Drive it a while and see how it does. A "little" oil in the radiator never hurt anybody. Good Luck.

Yep retorqued it when hot. The amount of oil was very bad or sure looked bad, as it blew out the rad and covered a good bit of the hood.

That sounds a little odd. Like maybe the radiator was too full. I can take the cap off of mine with the engine hot and nothing comes out. Maybe it is too full because the head gasket is leaking. Could also be causing additional pressure. Bummer. If you decide to replace the head gasket again, I am sure that you will check both head and block surfaces very carefully. Not to insinuate that you did not do that before. Sometimes we just have to take a deep breath and try again.
Don't ever let anything that you are working on win.

Reminds me of when I sold my 52 workhorse (Sampson) earlier this year. It had ALWAYS started easy for me since I got it, but the day someone came to look at it he would not start for anything. Ran the battery down, jumped it from a 12v battery and it still wouldn't start, etc. It was very embarrassing. My wife told me he just did not want to be sold :-)

Put a new head gasket on last summer? Head bolts tourqued down right? P.S. Replacing one or two rod bearings is asking for trouble. If they can be restored, think about holding them awhile.

You need to read better 2 differant tractors one is an 8N and one a 9N. The one I replaced 2 rod bearing on was a gamble since the oil pick up tube was bad. But the other one the 8N I replaced the head gasket on this summer and it ran just fine till today and now oil in the rad. but no water in the oil.

Your 8n just aint ready to leave home yet. It knew what you were up to. Your 9n knows it might be next. There just tryin to buy more time with you. As long as the rest of your week goes smooth, today wont look so bad. The last two weeks for me would have used up a bottle of asprin , if I took them. Tranny in my pickumup blew up , caused a downward spiral of bad luck. Im just know seeing a flicker of light at the end of the tunnel.

Parting them out is a viable option. I went to look at a complete '44 2N today for $600. Seller states that the valves have been replaced but it still needs rings. Compression is bad. Takes forever to get it started. Hasn't run in a year. I'm thinking of buying it and parting it out.
