2N Starter switch

My 2N will only start after I jiggle the gear shift lever and press the starter button many times. The starter itself works fine, so I think it is in the switch system. I have a parts catalog and suspect that it is one of these parts:

1. the switch itself (worn rod)
2. the starter push lever
3. the starter push rod

My questions are how do I determine which one is worn and needs replacement. Does anyone know which part is most likely to wear? Are there any specs available so that I could measure for wear?

Thanks,
Ron

Isolate each piece. If you have a VOM, set it for continuity, disconnect the wiring harness from the switch and check the switch for open and closed circuit. If it checks OK on repeated tests, then look for worn places on the push rod , lever or lock-out gate on the shifter plate under the cover. Once you have the transmission cover, off, it should be pretty obvious if something is worn out.
