Stuck valve guides

I"m trying to get the valves out of an 8N so I can replace the lifters. The exhaust valve assemblies came out easy enough but the intake valve guides are stuck and I can"t even get the keepers out. I"ve been spraying them with PB and also inserted a small pry bar in the ports and pryed against the guides. I"m being real careful not to pry so hard as to bust the ports. There has to be a better way. How can I make those guides give up?

Been there for sure, gots to drive the guides down just a hair and then the keepers wil come off. Then drive them back up. I used a combination of brass drift pin and the huge screwdriver as mentioned in the archives. In the the ports and lift up which shoves the guides down. Most of mine came out harder than $%*&.

I was similarly perplexed by those valve guides. I'll pass on some advice I picked up on the forum which made all the difference in the world. Get a cheapo valve spring compressor - looks like a big, flat, piece of metal with a slot in one end - available at any auto parts store. Use that to press each spring upwards and remove the two piece valve retainers. Once the retainers are off, withdraw the valve. Using a short wooden dowel (or brass punch)insert it through the block to the top of the valve guide. Whack the dowel a few times to drive the valve guide downward. You should be able to easily release the guide retainer clip and withdraw the valve guide from the bottom, rather than trying to pull it upwards.

I just pulled my 8N guides, and they had rubber seals on all 8. The intake were nasty, but I soaked them with Aerokroil for a few days, and then used a 3/4 inch brass (or was it steel?) pin and a large hammer. A few hits with the hammer and they moved down far enough to pull the keeper, and were then loose enough to force out the top. Be careful if you decide to use a pry bar - you can break the port casting. If you are putting in adjustable lifters you probably are putting in new guides, so don't worry if you break a bit of the guide beating on it. Good Luck!
