I have a 1946 2n, generator has a tension bolt and spring combo on top side which you can turn to tighten fan belt, it also has a bolt on bottom. What i'm trying to figure out is after getting correct tension on top bolt with spring do i have to tighten the bottom bolt tight or is it supposed to be alittle loose to let the top bolt and spring function? hope I'm phrasing this question coorectly. Thanks Chano

From what I've found out, the spring tensioner was a fix for a design error. The first 9N did not have it, later a retrofit kit was made to add the tensioner, and the last 2N had it from the factory. What tended to happen was if the axles pivoted far enough, and the axles were adjusted all the way in, the radius arm would hit the generator and loosen the belt. The spring was added to push the generator back to retighten the belt automatically.

So, from the original purpose, I would say the bolt should be loose enough to allow the spring to pivot the generator back. But unless you have the unique circumstance stated above, you could tighten it tight and call it good.

Wow, makes since now that you told me the history of what it was intended for. Thanks for sharing this information.I tryed looking back though the archives and couldn't find any info, maybe I was putting in wrong serach words.Did see some pics of the tensioners you mention, but no information. I must have the later original since it's an L shape bracketand not the clamp type. THANKS KCM

Well, for MY money, I would tighten the bottom bolt enough so that it doesn't vibrate and wiggle. . . thus wearing out the ears/bolt/holes needlessly.

Loose stuff wears. . . duey
