I just spent a morning using my recent purchase.
and of course I'm finding things I did not see when I was checking it out B4 purchase.
The right radius rod bolt is missing the lower portion so it is currently being held on by just the pin from the top, i.e. it rocks back and forth when I twist it. I'll lookup the fastner type and get one on order.

The other problem is that in 3rd or 4th gear the tractor wanders a lot, looks like it needs the sector adjusted. My manual says you have to remove the steering from the tractor and adjust it on the bench. I have an early model so you have to take the 4 cap screws out and rotate the plate one hole at a time to get the correct tension. Turn left side counter clockwise and right side clock wise.

If your still with me, can't I do that in place one the tractor and if I take the cap screws out will the oil begin draining out of the bolt holes?

Hi Ray,
Mountainman is exactly right on the adjustment. If your steering shaft is moving up and down, you need to address that first before the sector shafts can be adjusted. Something else to consider... when you turn your steering wheel watch the ends of your sector shafts, do they move around? There are 2 bronze bushings inside those shaft housings. They should have a pretty tight fit (.0001 or .0002") clearance to the shafts. If they are loose they will let the shaft's rock around and make things pretty sloppy. I just recently replaced mine, they were worn .0015" larger than the shaft O.D.

Thanks for the info. I tested the up/down play in the steering and cannot find any. There is a small amount side-to-side but none noticeable up and down. I checked the sectors arms and drag links and can find no slop any where. When driving I do notice that the right side steering arm moves quite a bit when moving over the smallest bump, at least quite a bit more than the left side.

I'll go head and put it on blocks and tighten the sector plate as suggested.

I had my 49 8N's steering apart last summer. I don't think you can loose fluid out of the adjuster's bolt holes. No reason you can't use the tractor as a workbench, but if your steering wheel has up and down play you will want to replace the bearings and to do that you will have to remove the box from the tractor. After scraping out the tar like residue after the "fluid" was dumped out, I cleaned out the housing and then used grease with a fitting where the fill plug went. Some say the "tunnel" effect of grease could cause problems but I think if you give it a few squirts when you change the oil it should last a long time.
I wouldn't waste time adjusting one hole at a time. Just turn (in the direction as you indicated) each adjuster as far as possible, then back off to the first available hole. If it feels too tight (not likely) you can back off one more hole. But check the steering wheel up and down play first. If it's excessive, all the adjusting in the world won't last long.
On the other hand, until you get the radius rod bolt squared away, you might not solve the wandering by working on the box. Also check your alignment — it should be about a quarter inch or less toe in.
Hope this helps.

One further suggestion:

Adjust the steering with both front wheels off the ground and free to follow the steering lock to lock. You don't want to get something into a bind that surprises you while you are running and become part of a safety post.

Your mileage may vary
