I have a 51 8N. About 6 inches to left of the Timing Hole and below the air cleaner there is a small screw in the housing. It appears there is a rubber washer/grommet next to the metal followed by 2 or 3 metal washers held by this screw. Does this screw serve any useful purpose or did somebody just plug a hole up in my housing? Thanks

Post a pic.. could it be a hole for a cable operated sherman? or other aux tranny that may have used that side for a shifter hole?

I'm not clear on the location of the hole you're talking about. Is it in the clutch housing? If so, it may be that someone used the tOTG method of unsticking a stuck clutch. John Bower, aka "the Old Tractor Guy" (tOTG) posted about a month ago giving a method to fix a stuck clutch. I just spent 20 minutes trying to find the post in the archives and came up dry.

Basically the procedure involved drilling a hole so that one could spray brake cleaner on the clutch to get it free up. Then he advocated tapping the hole to accept a threaded machine screw. Then it could be used again if the clutch got stuck again.

Jim--the hole is in the clutch housing about 2-3 inches from the point where you would break the tractor to replace a clutch. I remember seeing the post on the OTG method of unfreezing and will look for it. I would guess the hole that was drilled is less than 1/4". If it does not leak, do I need to be concerned with this for any reason, or should I think of it as another way of giving my 8N some "uniqueness"? Thanks
