I purchased a Ford 851 last summer and am now looking to get a brush ohg for it. I don't know what kind of weight the hydralics can handle. I am looking at a Bush Hog-Medium grade that weighs 794 lbs. and a Woods-medium that weighs 1096 lbs. I prefer the Woods but am concerned about the weight- should I be?

Thanks ahead of time..

I'd go with a 6' hog.. quality and price of your choice. Since some of the weight will be carried onthe tail wheel.. if your lift is in average condition.. it should be ok when mowing... However.. when lifting.. i agree.. you need front weight.

as for using a grade 8 shear bolt.. ( or even a 5 )... I've not seen any manuals specify anything but soft bolts. Have heard plenty of stories of grade 8 shear bolts detonating trannies though.... so.. As long as you have a spare 5spd and rear section setting up on blocks and are frogy about learning how to install them.. I'd use the exact shear bolt the manufacturer says... Our 6' cutters here at work use the soft grade 2 bolt...

Patrick:

Power wise, a 6 foot cuttter is just right for your 851. Yes, it will lift the heavier mower if the lift is good but it is too light in the front for that heavy of mower unless your ground is quite level.

I use a 6 footer with my 860. My mower weighs around 700 pounds and I have both front and rear wheel weights. Some of my ground is steep and I often carry the front wheels when lifting the mower while going up hill. Indeed, I have hills that are steep enough that I cannot raise the mower while going uphill.

Dean,

I was hoping to get a brush hog that would be able to cut through 2" thick red brush. The minimum size for that seems to be the medium and heavy duty ones, which weigh more. Do you have any other recommendations? I have been trying to find one that has a larger horsepower for the gear box, as I also have been told that is important. Any make or model recommendations?

I appreciate your time..

I will leave the brand up to you but just for information I get along real good with a 6' International brand. Cheep, simple and strong. Handles small trees and rocks real well. Now on the gearbox selection. Do you really want a gearbox on the hog that may easily tear up your tractor. I'd say a 40hp box the 540 pto and a 1/2" grade 5 or 8 bolt for shear or a well tuned slip clutch would be about what you want for your 851. I say well tuned slip clutch as those things can freze up pretty solid

If you are taking new The Bush hog is the way to go. The brand new 6 ft we bought makes the old landpride 5 ft we traded in on it. Is like comparing a bruch hog to a horse drawn sickel mower. The extrea wieght is the heavier steel.

It should play with a 6 footer. I suto use a 6 footer on my 841 and it handled it well. The 3 point will lift way more then what you want it to, the front end will come up before you run out of lift. My self I have lifted up the front of a car with my 3 point and a boom pole, but I have a front end loader so I don't have the light front problem
