Can someone tell me if the transmission case on my 8N is cast iron or cast steel? I need to weld a crack and want to be sure my procedures are correct. Thanks in advance for your reply
Greg

Hi,

It is cast iron. Are you going to do the weld repair yourself? If so, you will need to be able to heat the whole case up, weld it hot and then slowly cool it after high temp stress relief. Ni rod.

If not thermally treated, you stand a great chance of it spontaneously cracking again right next to your weld line.

It might be cheaper to replace the case. My trans had cracks that were repaired and re-cracked b4 I bought. I repaired them, they recracked, so I replaced the case. It was a "DOH!!" moment as I found the replacement case for $75.

the crack is on the right side of the transmission case at about the level of the running board. It's shaped like a Y and is about 12" in length and runs horizontal with the one leg of the Y heading up. i became confused on the material after reading about welding cast iron and they started into verifying if it was cast iron (grey or white) or cast steel.
thanks

I agree with bob. Some pieces are cast steel.. but I doubt the center castings are.

Where is the crack?

I have an 8" weld on my 2n's cast iron oil pan.. never had a problem with it.

As another poster stated.. is this a place where epoxy might be used?

In a non pressure area on my center hyds section i had a crack on my 8n.. someone brazed it, then sanded then polished down... never been an issue.... so braze / silver solder is a possible idea.

Is this a place where JB Weld might work better?

I've never heard of a transmission or rear end casting from a tractor being ANYTHING except cast iron, and I'm sure your "N" is no exception.
