There was a dead standing maple on the edge of my field so I decided to get some seat time and go get it. When I got out there I started my saw and the pull cord broke, luckily the saw was running. I fell the tree and then by habit I shut off the saw. I was pretty far from the barn so I decided to drag the whole tree in from the field. Bingo trudged through the soft snow just fine until I hit a slight incline close to my barn. I went in and fixed the saw and cut the tree in half and dragged the rest of it in no problem. It always amazes me what these little tractors can do.

I guess my skidder chains came in handy.

Hey vtscott--

What great pictures!!! I can look at those pictures and just feel the stress leave my body.

Now--as an owner of a 2N and an 8N, you aren't giving me any news flashes about what those tractors can do. The only people who are skeptical about them are the ones who have never used them.

Weather is gorgeous here today (Thurs), at least 55 F by mid afternoon. The snow from the weekend storm is almost gone everywhere; lots of bare ground in the woods now. A warm rain is predicted for tomorrow - that should take care of the rest of it.
Very nice looking spread you've got there. I've got 36 acres here but it's all woods, no open fields like you've got. It's nice to have that breathing room since there is development going on all around me.

Carl,

The big lunk skidder chains come in pretty handy in 10 inches of slush, I slow down a little but she keeps chuggin along, I have to drag wood over some of my lawn, I really do not want to see what it looks like in the spring. The grass around here grows too fast anyways. I would be much more inclined to get some new chains if I was plowing snow on a regular basis, but there just is not that much snow this year.

I own 61 acres but a lot of it is wooded and steep. Not much development around my house, across the street is a 300+ acre 60 head dairy farm that is mostly in a flood plain so I am not too worried about people building there.

Get ready for the cold, we are supposed to have an almost 60 degree change in temp in the next 2 days.

Back in the "good old days" on our NY farm, we used to burn about 20 full cords of hard maple every winter. Every log was skidded with our 8N -- if you hook'em short and use the hydraulics to lift the front end of the log a little, they're great log skidders. When you do this on a big one going up the mountain, you may have to learn to steer with the brakes!

Yes these little tractors can pull a load! I pulled this 14' X 70' Mobile Home for this guy over 2 miles and up hill most of the way to his place because the movers could not get it in there. Just a little bit bigger tractor it was a MF135 with a 39 HP Gas Engine but it did the job with out a problem at all! It was a BIG Trailer to tow! The 3 point came in handy for raising and lowing the hitch on it when I went off across a bumpy feild turning it around. The hitch drug on the ground a few times but Low Range took care of that problem. Nothing like plowing a feild with a Trailer!! Mark H.

I just looked up the weight of one. They figure a 14 x 70 weighs around 16,000 lbs. I know it had 3 axles under it. Mark H.

Scott. You could have pulled the whole tree in very easy by snugging the tree up to the cross bar. Set the cross bar on top of it, chain it tight to the tree and raise it very slightly. This will put the weight of the tree on the rear wheels and you would have just walked it into the barn area. Nice tractor and great barn. Your country looks very much like where I live, in the Upper Peninsula of MI. Have fun, enjoy Bingo and this really nice weather. Ron

Im desk bound at work for at least 1 more day this week,looking at that picture makes me want to bolt to the door and get to my farm in northern NY. It was 52 degrees in SYR NY today. Great weather for cutting firewood. Thanks for the pictures.

Do your inlaws have a dairy farm? I live about 18 miles from Barneveld and I know almost all of the dairy farmers in Herkimer and Oneida Counties.

Not dairy, but lamb, pork and veggies in the last few years, before that I think is was mainly beef. My cousin farms it now.

Hi Bob,
My getaway place is in the town of Herkimer just outside the village on top of a hill. On one side of me is what I was told is a farm of several hundred acres. They had cattle when I first bought my place but not any more. The same family still owns the place but can't think of the name right now except that it was a Polish name. My brother owns 74 acres in the town of Schuyler on the Bell Hill rd. And it is for sale. Thought I'd mention it since you are so familiar with the area. Very pretty area.

That sounds like the farm name next to me in Herkimer on the Steuben hill rd. On the Bell Hill rd. we bought the property from the widow of the farmer 'MARX'. When we got it it had the old farmhouse, huge barn in bad condition, milk house and another hay/outhouse. All is gone since someone or lightning set the house on fire.

That's beautiful scenery you have in the background there Scott. I did a two week bicycle ride through Vermont last summer and thoroughly enjoyed the people and the scenery. From Burlington to Canada to Orford, NH and through Bethel,Rochester, Middlebury and then over to Ticonderoga on the NY side.

I'm leaving in the morning for our ski club lodge in Lower Granville where we'll be XC skiing for the weekend. A lot of places are closed for lack of snow but we'll have a great time anyway.

Not much in the way of snow this year, most of the XC and snowmobile trails are closed still.

VT is very pretty but I moved here from the NW I still miss the BIG mountains.

Great pics. Too true. No offense. Larger is better. I still haven't finished my 2N (looking forward to having it run), but, my Model 60 is STRONG. Forgot to mention the 5200 lbs. + filled tires!!
