My local impliment dealer has an 8N on the lot and I was thinking if I added a small bush hog, this would make a nice way to cut my weedy pasture and hills. It's worn, but it appears to all be there.

Anything in particular I should check for before I go for the checkbook ? Rust, leaks, tires and etc ?

oliver, try searching the archives on this site. Type something like rollover tests and you should find plenty. Dell knows all about the tests conducted but he hasn;t been around much. some university rolled different tractors down hills to determine speeds and angles of when the beasts would flip. Can probably google it. Also talks about direction to mow, for instance mowing up and down and not across an incline. Also stuff about center of gravity and weight distribution of the beast.

Just don't buy it if his name is Mr. Haney.

Just in case nobody got my joke, Oliver Douglas (the poster's name) was the guy on Green Acres.

His tractor was a "Hoyt-Clagwell" (really an old Fordson).

I have to pick a new screen name :)
Everytime I post here someone asks about Lisa or the tractor.

Thanks for the advise on the 8N... now if only it was green :)

what do you mean by hills? If they're like my hills they are miniture mountains and my 8N has a difficult time pulling the hog, going up the hills and fighting the brush. If you like the tractor buy it but be aware that they have their limitations, especially on rough terrain. You might consider a more modern tractor with adequate brakes, Rops, perhaps even 4 wheel traction and a little more HP. If you purchase the tractor at least take it slow and read up on proper mowing techniques on slopes.

This is a stupid question. Where would you find the proper mowing techniques on hills? I am interested in this.

The link to the Smith's site from Charles (below) will give you just about all the info you need to make an intelligent purchase. Do take some time looking at the entire site so that you will get an idea of what the tractor is supposed to look like & if it really is an 8N as opposed to a 2N or 9N. Like it says on the Smith's site, test the hydraulics by lifting a heavy implement. Make sure you start it cold & run it through all 4 gears, then restart it hot.

How familiar are you with the implement dealer. Most that I know of anyway don't want to sell junk. They'll go over them and check them out before it goes up for sale. You're on the right track it sounds like. Check for bad leaks, quiet engine, decent oil pressure, smooth hydraulics, no oil in anti-freeze or vice versa, decent tires, smooth operating clutch, easy starting, etc. I'm sure you'll get plenty more suggestions.
Good Luck, Lee
P.S. They're a great little tractor for the uses you mentioned.
