I may be in a position of looking for a new block. My "49 has started spewing copious amounts of oil out the radiator. At first I suspected just a blown head gasket but the amount of oil coming out is making me fear a cracked block. I know where there is another engine that I can get for free but it has been sitting outside for 4 or 5 years without a head. Could the deck be resurfaced enough to get past the rust pitting or is this thing just a boat anchor?
I know that a rebuild would be in order for it but mine needs one also.

Are you getting water in the oil, or just combustion products in the radiator?

Is the crankcase oil getting white and foamy, with oil settling to the bottom, when it sits a few days? (Loosen the oil drain plug a bit, and see if any water has settled out of the oil.)

For this flathead engine to actually PUMP crankcase oil into the radiator, it would have to have a crack from the oil pressure gallery in the block, into the water jacket. Some have said that this can happen, and perhaps it can, but IMHO, it would be an extremely rare thing, and highly unlikely... of course, there's always that chance.

If you end up needing one I have a side mount available that I will make you a good deal on. Email me, it is open.

there was a complete engine in the classifieds a couple of days ago for $500.00. The gentleman selling swaped it out for a funk conversion.

You might be able to save it or you might not. Question is why whs it left out that way, it also might be bad. If you find you do need a block I have one from a 9N complete engine just has a bad crank and bad bearings. It still runs but knockes.
