What do most of you set your idle at? The specs call for 400 RPM's but my 8N seems to want to quit running at anything under 500---To my "untrained ear" the engine sounds great at around 600 RPM.

My 52 idles fine at 400 rpm's but I don't like that because you can't even tell the motor is running. Just kind of bugs me. So I always move the throttle to 5 or 600.

I really like the term "trained ear ". I have mine at about 600 rpm also. I just like the sound at that speed better. It will idle at the 400 but it just sounds toooo slow to my "trained ear ".

Just swapped a better carb onto my 9N engine. Throttle shaft on the old one was completly worn out. The new carb is not a MS but it idles down to around 400 RPM and runs much better.

Thanks Walt and Jim---I will let it alone at 600 where it seems to run the best!

I"ve been around some that you can hardly hear running at 400 rpm. Mine I think is up around 5 or 600 and it sounds fine to My "trained ear". Personally I think 400 is too low.

I think 600 is good too! In fact, the 400 factory "recommendation" is kind of a goofy, misleading thing, IMHO. For one thing, long periods of very slow idling starves upper cylinders of oil-splash lubrication and can lead to excessive piston temp and sleeve wear. Higher rpms keep oil slung up there and keep the piston cooler and the upper cylinder better lubricated.
