Stock is steel sleeves for your early 48 8N tractor - but many were bored out for the thicker sleeves early on in their lives. The only way you will know is to pull the head.

I guess I really didn't answer your question did I... The cast iron is an improvement to the thinner steel sleeves and reduces the "rippling"(sp) effect when put under a heavy load. If it hasn't been done yet, you may consider the upgrade to the thicker cast iron sleeves.

Well...I'm probably way out of my depth here, or else I might not be telling you anything you don't already know. But just in case it's helpful I can say that I know the cast iron sleeves are thicker than the steel ones. If you had steel in your original engine (and your number is low enough that I think you would), you would have to bore out the cylinders to put in cast iron now. I believe you also have to have a lip area reamed into the top of the cylinder because the cast iron ones have a rim or lip that the steel ones don't have. The I&T FO-4 manual has details on exactly how to do this. And you may have already seen that. (In which case, woops.)

If you are asking about the different material properties of cast iron and steel, then, um... Hm. Then you'll have to wait for one of the great old Ford tractor engineer type people to chime in on this thread. (Sorry. I just don't know enough.)

HTH, Dawn
