so i rebuilt the pump this morning and pulled the lift valve cover off and much to my dismay i found that the reason i wasn"t lifting anything is that the piston seems to be stuck pushed all the way forward. How can i get that dern thing out?? My hand is too big to fit inside so i"d have to find some tool to do it unless you guys got another way. I also noticed when i pulled it out that the hydraulic fluid is really really thin, almost like used up motor oil. It will definately get drained and the insides definately cleaned out. Any suggestions, thanks.

Ryan - are you talking that the piston is crammed to the back of the piston cylinder? If so, this is normal, the "dogbone" is not attached to the piston and when the lift arms are down it pushes the piston inside the cylinder. If you have an air compressor, you can blow some air though the small outlet tube sticking out the backside of the cylinder. Just be carefull and don't use too much pressure or you will shoot the piston out like a rocket :-) I have removed the cylinder from the lift cover and banged the open end on the ground to get the piston to move forward to the end. Or (and I am almost embarassed to tell you this) I have wiped off the end of this tube good and blew air through my mouth to get this piston out before I had a compressor :-)

Good luck,
Dan

Dan.

thanks for the info, the air compressor did its duty and blew that sucker right out and about 6" in the air, managed to catch her though so it didn"t get damaged. Cleaned it all up, checked everything and put it all back together. I"m waiting on monday so i can run to the NH dealer and get some fluid as i don"t know anywhere else to get that would be open on a sunday. Does the tranny take the same fluid or does it use something else?? I am to get 134d hydraulic fluid, right??

Wal-Mart stocks the hydraulic oil for tractors, and is about 1/2 the price of NH

Good to hear you got it out, and yes - 134d is the correct hydraulic fluid for your system. It is basically a 20w oil, so it will be kinda thin.
