Being the great N charging system "guru", After I fixed my 9N, I took a look at my neigbors 8N to see why it wouldn't charge. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. First the battery was in backwards, neg grounded. Then the voltage regulator, which was new, had every wire wrong. the batt was on the field, the field was on the arm and the arm was on the batt. Could they have hooked it up this way to make it work being that the battery was in backwards? I put a volt meter on the generator and it's putting out positive volts at the arm term? I guess it could if polorized wrong. So I tried polorizing the right way. I put the bat in right and held neg to the field for 15 seconds or so, is this correct? It didn't do it. I think the voltage reg is toast and I hope I can get the gen working. What is the difference between the pre #263843 regulators and after and can I tell by looking at them? Thanks guys.

Putting the battery on to the field terminal of the regulator will damage it... The field termial inside the regulator is hooked to ground through contacts. When these contacts open then the field is to ground via a resistor. Polarizing the generator is accomoplished by placing battery voltage to the armature terminal of the generator (this type) and not the field. The difference in early model 8N and later model 8Ns is the current relay. Later models are set for 20 amps and earlier for 11.5.

I just had to replace the regulator on my 8N for the second time. This time the part didn"t come with instructions. I remember that I had to polorize it once it was hooked up. Do I have to touch the battery and the arm wire together on the regulator or the generator?
