Sometimes rough running under load

I have a 52 8N that I purchased after a new engine overhaul. Used it last year to hog and grade with a box blade-ran perfectly-I love this tractor. I always run gas out of carb by turning shutoff while running. I drained the tank out this spring after being stored in the dry all winter, and replaced the fuel bulb cup (dropped the old one on the drive) and cut a gasket out of gasket cork , installed them and she started right up. Bulb is full of fuel with no apparent debris. But when she is under a load hogging light grass she sometimes runs rough- almost missing- I take her out of gear and she runs and idles fine. Is this a fuel problem?, carb? something else?-help! I am not a great mechanic.

It could be that your main jet needs to be opened a little. Try that and see if it helps. If not then it may be an ignition problem or governor problem.
The distributor has a centrifugal spark advance. As rpm increases the weight advance the spark, so that it's firing at the right time for the rpm. If the weights are gunked up with oil or rust or if the pins and plate are worn, then the spark can't advance=rough running.
Another scenario: the governor is worn or misadjusted so that when the throttle setting doesn't match the rpm, the engine doesn't get enough fuel.

thanks for the info-I will try the fixes. After I disengaged the imlement when it was running rough the RPM revs up all by itself once and then dies down to normal. I forgot to add that to my description-Maybe that is a sign to someone of whats wrong-help!

It could still be a fuel thing, make sure that the other two filters in the supply line are clean.

Above the fuel shutoff/bulb is a filter and inlet opening (not a likely source based on your flush of the tank, but possible)

Then clean the filter at the carb inlet fitting. This may be the likely problem area if it is fuel supply problem.

My first guess was as bg said - Try opening (counterclockwise) the main adjusting needle by 1/8th of a turn to see if that helps. If so, maybe even try another 1/8 of turn will make it even better. Test under load and only open the minimal amount necessary to get smooth operation under load.
