Single Wire Generator

Until recently my old single wire Generator has been charging my battery. I now see no indications of it charging and it drains the battery. This is a 12V system. I have seen references on the board that this old Generator is sometimes more trouble than it is worth. Do you have any suggestions on what I need to do to replace it, and with what if it needs it. Or is there maybe another problem that I am missing.

Thank You,

Chuck

The first thing that hits me as wrong is a 6v generator won't charge a 12v battery. So, I don't know if in fact you have a ground somewhere draining the batterey, or just the wrong charging system. OR..... ....you are using the wrong nomenclature, and you really have an alternator. Which is it ?

Good question. I'm pretty sure that it is a single wire generator. It was this way when I got it. What I'm calling a generator is a unit about 9 inches long with a single wire. I loaned out my parts book, so I don't know for sure.

Sure sounds like an OEM 6v generator...

I hear it's possible to get that generator to charge a 12v battery. It's not designed for it though and maybe the stress killed it?

'Course, it's likely to be pretty old anyway and maybe it was just its time.
